School me on Toyota front axles

I have owned many Toyotas, but have never been into a front axle. I want to swap pumpkins and install a lunchbox locker on my current Toy.

What do I need to have ready?

Gear oil
Pumpkin gasket or some type of RTV?
Will the Birfield seals or anything outboard need to be changed or are they reusable?

What is the rundown for removing the axles to then remove the pumpkin?

Which ez locker is the best and quietest for a front axle?

Anyone have a 5.29 front and rear pumpkin for sale? :)

You shouldn't have to replace any gaskets at the axle ends unless you just want to. Those axle seals are known to leak, so it would be a good opportunity to change them if needed. There are a bunch of write-ups on taking the axle apart, just google it. I use RTV for the seal, just clean the surface well. I don't think there is such a thing as a quiet lunchbox locker...lol. I've had good luck in the past with Lock-Right. I have a buddy that broke a Spartan. Neither were in Toyotas though.

just pay attention to the way it comes apart its not very getting the preload on the locker correct can be a bit of a challenge if you have never done it before

It fairly easy job. I would probably change the axle tube seal while I was there so you don't have to tear it all down again when it starts leaking. You may get lucky if you are very careful removing them and reinstalling them. Just try not to "drag" it over the seal.

The snap ring on the end of the birfield seems to give my buddies the biggest problem. I use two small screw drivers and pop it off. Just shield it with you hand when you pop it off or you may be on a scavenger hunt.

I put a lock rite in my 9.5 cruiser front. It was very easy to do.

Search youtube, there are several good videos. Really the hardest part I remember was getting the highsteer arm off of the top of the knuckle.
