Looking to possibly put a set under the TJ in the future. I want to run a gear ratio in the 5.36 range, I also want to run around a 38 inch tire.

So tell me what I need to know. I have read many posts about how strong the yota axles are, Is that true? I know nothing about them currently. Are there differences in the yota axles, I hear people just calling them yota axles, I have seen reference to 4cyl and 6cyl axles, is that the only differences?

Please add any info that you may have.

I love yota axles, but if I were swapping axles on my TJ, I would go D44/9''. On the other hand, I run 37s on stock fj40 axles (locked but w/ stock shafts/birfields). 30 spline longs are the ticket to a strong yota axle (my next upgrade).

rears are the same, except the 6 cylinder version have a bigger bearing size. Front, if you throw in some Longfields, you will be golden. To get the same stance as you have now you will most likely want to run spacers.

I'd look for an Ifs rear axle, run spacers on the front to match the width. Load them with 5.29 and longfield axles in the front. The rear the stock shafts hold up very well. Are you going to cut and rotate the balls or run a different tcase?
This was a serious idea for my ECORS racer but going cheap and sticking with what I've got.
Edit: dang it Chip, you must type faster than me!!!

86- up rears are wider.
79-86 front axle are about the same.
I hate to say it but pirate has a toyota bible that has EVERYTHING you need to know...

The diff is going to be on the wrong side.

My runner is a carb'd v8 with 39" iroks. I just swapped in a v8 vortec with a 203/205 doubler (haven't wheeled it yet this year). Front axle is fj-40 (larger ring and pinion vs a minitruck axle) with minitruck knuckles, brakes, etc... 30 spline longs. Rear is a centered fj-40 rear (same reason as front) with minitruck axles. knock on wood, nothing broken yet. I would describe myself as moderate on the skinny pedal. I was having trouble with the 4cyl diffs shredding ring gears. Went to fj-40, all is well. Friends of mine on the board had similar combinations with no breakage. Went to 42's and things started disagreeing a bit.

like everyone elese i ran 40 irocs with longs and never had a problem stay with the stock hubs and mabey get the bobby long hubs gears if you got the coin. run a ifs rear and spacers up front they should be colse to the same width as the dana stuff you currenty have. as for the diff in the front it is gonna be on the pass side if you run a d300 you can run the rotate kit and be good to go!! this build would top the cake for sure id like to see the sticker its a jeep thing thats why i run toyota axles lol

Personally I'd go with a D44HP, and a 9" due to the added track width for stability. Then you could leave the TC alone other than maybe a 2-low mod and 4:1 kit.

To get close to the stock width of a d30, you need to do the ifs hub conversion to get the added width. anything more, and you'll have to run spacers and 2" BS wheels.

LOL I'm still working on the jeep... http://nc4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80966

Ya I was just yanking your chain... There are many positives for running them. I'm running them IMHO for <38" tires they are great axles. With 38s, depending on your driving style and what parts your running + many other variables, you may have start to have issues as mentioned above.. The width issue really does suck BUT if your not looking for full width there are some options. I installed the IFS hubs to add 3" so its close to stock TJ width. You just have to watch the wheel offset to limit excessive scrub radius.

BUT all that said there is solutions for every problem out there. The difference is when starting from scratch will you go far enough down that path to fell like a different path would have been better.. PBB is full of Toy vs D44 info... It's really a personal decision and one that you need to make..

For me it came down to really liking the toy driveline (attached to my jeep engine) and liking the drop out 3rd, flanged drive shafts, t-tcase and cheep 4.7s gears etc..

for yota axles to get close to the 5.38 gear you would have to run either 5.29s, or 5.71s.
ive heard if there beefed up with soem goodies yota axles are really stout. no experience with that personally, bu tive heard a few people say that. now dont get get me wrong im a yota guy all the way, but if i had a Jeep and was wantin stronger axles, i would go full width. but thats jsut me.

Run Toyota axles, they are stronger than tons.

I'll sell you mine when I am done breaking them this season. :flipoff2:

99NCXJ on here is putting FJ80 axles under his XJ... http://www.4x4grace.com/vBulletin/showthread.php?t=6232

I have thought about this swap before too, but the work is swapping everything over to PSD... but you can flip the housing and balls and make the axle DSD... also minitruck axles are narrow (stock jeep width is as wide as you get), but FJ/FZJ80 axles are wider. (I think FJ60 stuff may be as well)... FJ40/60 axles will give you the bigger diff, but behind the jeep 4cyl, the 8" should be fine...

Ok I think I am going on the look for a Front Toy Axle.

I am going to try and get one close to the width of my rear 8.8 (59.75 inches), Which should be do able.

My thinking is and correct me if this is a really bad Idea.

Get a '79-85 Toyota trucks and 4runners 55.5 inches wide, Swap over IFS Hubs (Puts it at 58.25) The run Spacers/Adapters to get to 62.25 width. And then add a spacer to the 8.8 to get it to 63.25.

So I am looking at 62.25 in the front and 63.25 in the rear. Which is not an issue I am currently about 1.25 difference front to rear.
