My family has 3 toyotas and they all have a noise coming from the rear, sounds likes rocks in the drum. pulled them off and Nothing!

Is this a problem with most toyotas???

1 toyota 4runner and 2 p/u's

Sometimes the rear dust/dirt shield that the drum slides right past is bent in slightly, just enough to makes contact. Your drums might need to be adjusted also

Things like that drive me crazy, i'm ocd... even if my truck looks like hell, it WILL NOT have any exhaust leaks, NO squeaks, NO rattles exept maybe the boggers slowing down and each cleat smacking the pavement:Rockon:

check the axle bearings

Ok thanks. Will look at it when it gets light, Pretty sure the dust/dirt shield on my grey truck is pretty bent up from being in mud and dirt over half way of the rims, but didnt see it contacting the drum. My 4runner i put new brakes all the way around and it makes the same noise. Hope i find the problem I hate the scratching noise when pulling off at a stoplight.

if it only does it when your pulling away from a stop light. It may be your pinion bearing in the third, or the u joints. Axle bearings could be bad, like mentioned. If it has the two piece drive shaft, it could be the center support bearing going out.

one other question: Are you certain it is coming from the rear and not somewhere else in the vehicle?

but you could jack it up put it on jack stands and roll the tires and see more clearly where it is coming from unless it only does it under a load.

yep it only comes from the drivers side, around the drum.

If it only does it under a load put it up on jackstands and set the e brake a little or you can hold the brake and push the gas at the same time to simulate a load.
