what are some mods (easy, i'm just learning) i can do to my scx10? any ideas?

If it has plastic links build some Aluminum links. That is always a good place to start.

a hand brothers 3 link conversion for the front is a good place to start..swap on a set of 2.2 wheels and tires will give you better ground clearance... lipos, and a better motor check out rccrawler.com there is an entire section for scalers on there
