Seafoam in a turbo diesel

I have a '00 7.3 PSD 6 speed with a super chip and 4 inch exhaust. I don't pull with it often but when I do it allways did just fine.

Friday I pulled my jeep home on a hudson trailer ( trailer weighs 1600-1800 + the Cherokee). I was on I-40 running about 60-65 @ 1800 RPM, my usual speed, when I started up a grade, I got real bad "turbo chop", bad enough that I would back out or gear down. It also felt like it was down on power a little. Just to see, I sped up to 75 @ 2200 RPM (the turbo comes in around 2000) and the "chop" went away a pulled realy good but after a minute or so, the engine light would come on.

I had never noticed the "chop" before. The only difference is seafoam. Before I headed out, I filled up & added a bottle of it. I know that it will make it run hotter and is suposed to clean out the fuel system. I have ran it before but not while pulling.

Or is this a turbo isue? The turbo is a little louder the last year or so....

Any ideas?

somewhere I've read about a compressor wheel upgrade for the turbo... iirc there's a thread in this section discussing it.

Check your turbo shaft play.

From what I've read, .020 lateral and .003 axial are the limits. How hard is it to rebuild? Looks like you can get a kit with the Banks upgraded wheel for $150-$200

That's a little far to drive, I'm gonna check the end play this weekend and go from there.

It doesn't look like it would be too difficult to rebuild. I've machined / assembled similar things over the years at work. My biggest concern would be checking the housing for warp and finding the specs. Anybody have a good source for that info?

How are you going to balance the shaft?

Hmm.... good question. The "wheels" should be a snug slip or light press, they should also be pretty well balanced shouldn't they? Unless the shaft is bent or was balanced by removing material, it also should be fairly true. So I'm guessing you balance the rotating assembly? I realize these thing spin pretty quick so balancing is critical. I just hadn't thought about that.

Problem is, this is my daily driver. Leaving it tore down for a week while I ship the turbo off really isn't an option ( especially now that the Jeep isn't much of a street vehicle ) Buying a new / rebuilt unit just isn't in the budget (since the wife hasn't worked since her crash ).

I looked into your place in Concord but getting it there will be a problem.

$400 labor + parts is a bit of a stretch also.... which leads me to rebuilding it myself....

Your better off finding one used in good condition than wasting your money rebuilding, just to have the bushings wore out in 15-20K miles...

Have you looked around on ebay? Local junk yards?

Yeah, i think you are right. I've looked around a little. If nothing else, I will put on a used for now and send mine out latter. I really want to get the Banks wheel for sure. I don't like the "chop" I have now. I have heard it can be bad for the turbo in the long run.

EDIT: I just hate the thought of putting a used one on.....

I looked at the banks wheel, with banks unless you get a *kit* your paying for the name. I found a upgraded compressor wheel for $100 & got the 1.0 turbine housing. 4" MRBP turbo back exhaust kit on ebay.

Search the net, seems like I read somewhere the the 94-98 psd compressor wheels are the same as the wiked wheel..
I have a file at home with links & more info.

The turbo upgrades helped on the hills & upper end torque. By far the best upgrade was the exhaust.

Shoot a pm too http://www.nc4x4.com/forum/index.php?members/mysterync.6272/

He who I asked when I was upgrading my turbo.

The "Wicked Wheel", it pretty much eliminates all compressor surge. Continued surge is a sign of, or can cause the bearings to go out faster.

Make sure you check your waste gate. If it's fluttering or cracking. It can fool you..

Don't even know where or how to check that. Im pretty dumb when it comes to diesels. Guess it's time to study up.

I'm not sure what the factory is set at a quick search gave me this.

nah the 6.0 uses a vgt

but if youve got a good 6.0 turbo hit up thediesel stop and powerstroke boards...it will sell at that pice in minutes

I did my own rebuild. I have never done anything like that before. It took about 6 hours taking it off rebuilding it and putting it back in. I ordered a rebuild kit for $130 and the Wicked wheel for like $90. Very easy to rebuild. I found a good HOW TO video on youtube and just followed it. If you were close I would help you do it. I say do it yourself. When I got mine apart I found tht my shaft play was so bad that it ate into the center section of the Turbo. I got a used turbo for $100.
