setting time on 4.3

How can I tell if the #1 cyl is on tdc intake or exhaust? I set the valves but the damn thing still won't run very well. I think I must have set the valves while the #1 cyl was on the exhaust.

Do you have any timing marks?

 

[Eastern]

Hold your thumb over the #1 spark plug hole and bump the motor over, wait for it to blow out on you. You can then feel the piston come to the top of its stroke. (tdc)

Double check and make sure you are on #1 cylinder.
