Alright, I have never set up gears before and this past weekend destroyed the third in my axle. Got it pulled and its missing all kinds of teeth. Well I have another third with an lsd in it that I would like to swap a detroit I have in instead. I really want to learn how to set the gears up on the detroit and toss it in the third. What special tools would I need once I have the gears broken off the lsd and ready to put on the detroit? I was thinking a press, dial indicator? what else? Thanks for the help. Its a toyota 3rd by the way.

I have set up only a few Toyota 3rds and I normally use a "clam shell" to get the old bearings off in the press. Sometimes the bearings will come off without being pressed when it is used. Just depends on how tight they are.
I would look into borrowing one or buying one. They really help out.

Are you going to be using an install kit? might as well since you are in there already.

If you need help with the bearings I've got a Randy's R+P bearing puller and a press. I'm on the Southeastern side of Winston Salem.

You can get what you need at Harbor Freight if you want cheap. Where I got my clamshell, dial indicator and press, etc. Has held up well through 10+ installs.

A toyota third has got to be the most user friendly diff to set up that I've ever worked with. Be sure to take your time to get the mesh pattern set right (pinion depth). This is equally as important as backlash. Although the two effect each other directly, they are two different things.

I went to harbor freight the other day and browsed around... I have been reading up a lot on the PBB but with the time I have and not knowing anyone first-hand to show me how. I think I'll just buy a set up third until I can get some help setting some up...
