I'd say go for the reversal because you won't get as many bent springs that way, but you have to drop your spring hangers down a ways or either french in your shackles in the frame so that you can get the right pinion angle.
Makes for smoother ride on trails and ability to bump obstacles with front more. Also opens a can of worms like driveshaft slipping out, axle walk, clearance to fenders, etc. Trailer queens don't bother.
