Shaving Tooth on 4.10 setup?

Question..... Is it normal to have to shave a bit off the ring gear teeth to have clearance for the cross shaft in a 4.10 setup? John and I ran into a problem trying to get the cross shaft into the carrier today.

I've heard of people doing that. To avoid it, I pulled the carrier and unbolted the ring gear...4.10 D30 and AMC20....installed lockers, re-install ring gear, re-install carrier.

Happened on my 8.8 ring gear. A call to lock-rite and they said that grinding off a little of the tooth would not hurt a thing. They actually recommended doing this. It worked and is doing fine.
My gears are 4.88s.
