SHIFTER KNOB FROM POOL TABLE BALL

Being this is the tech section I figured I'd let you know stripes seem to work better than solids for shifters.

I think after using both, I would use a timesert, they are much much better than helicoils.

Hmm - Never used them. But from a quick google they look pretty decent.
I can see where they would be better in some applications.
This shifter knob idea, being one of those applications.

Maybe because I just spent all morning putting HeliCoils in a stripped block.

(Customer tried to do his own oil pan gasket in a Toyota W/ IFS and a 3.0)

I am not thinking too fondly of them - or anything like them - at the moment.

Timesert questions -

Can you stack them for a deep hole like you can with HeliCoils?

Are they available most of the same places you can get HeliCoils?

No you don't or can't stack them because of the way they work and are engineered. in a case where you have a deep hole, you buy different lengths.
ANd second, No, the only place I have seen them available are through engine supply houses. I know, not cool, but that is the case here.

I did this to a 2 ball when I was in highschool ( WAYYYY Back ) tried a few different times, seems not all pool balls are of "quality" materials.

The best composition I found was from a commercial table (bar, bowling alley, pool hall, coin op tables ) balls for home use have a wierd sand like core to them.

The commercial ball had a solid core ( solid as far as I drilled anyway)

filed a little flat on the side of the ball I wanted the hole in and drilled, tapped it to 3/8-16
the flat worked well with a locking nut to help hold it on the shifter. A Heli-coil or timesertwould help greatly.

DISCLAIMER: I do not advocate the piffering of balls from above mentioned establishments, At the time I happend to know the owner of an amusments co. that had cases of damaged balls and equipment. and was able to get them from him.

My junk has a 8 ball from a local bar I play pool at a lot. Solid core, took threads just fine. We also drilled and tapped a cue for Skippys Nissan. Like I said, both of 'em took threads fine. One bonus, those things are heavy enough to knock out another driver in a road rage game. :flipoff2:

Interesting. I am wanting to make a large shifter knob outta wood. I am thinking a blood red color. I was wondering how to put it on and have it not get wallered out. A friend told me to try a helicoil but I am not sure if it would loosen over time? Being wood and not metal. Anyone try this?
