I need to ship a VW beetle hood to New York. I am sure someone here has had to tackle a similar problem at some point. Who can I call to get a quote for this? I really don't have any way to strap it to a pallet or anything, so I'm not sure how this would work. Thanks in advance.

Awww man I just burned all my pallets out back.It was a hell of a fire, really enjoyed it.Anyways, there is a shipping place right here by my house just past Miami off of 70 that will do that for you. They have pallets,I think they are like $5 or something. That's where I shipped that last motor I sold from,it really wasn't that expensive.

I shipped a couple of axles with Wilson trucking in Durham. They are located on 70, right across from Kemps seafood.
A 300 lb axle to Utah cost around $200 to ship. You will have to crate it somehow or I doubt it will make it undamaged.

Any chance you could piggyback it on somebody else's trip?

I dunno if it'll help, but I'm driving to Baltimore tomorrow.

For a VW hood I'd think a pallett would be the only option. Only other option is either sandwick between plywood in a frame or in just cardboard. The weight of a VW hood would be minimal though. Just use alot of twine and probably cardboard at least on the corners for the heck of it. I have palletts in N. Durham if interested but they aren't big enough for what you need. You'd probably need a larger sized pallett than the standard sized ones?
I've had good luck through Freightquote.com but it don't hurt to call your local transports. They're giving some heck of a deals right now at moment's notice if they are going that way anyways. I've gotten some unreal quotes lately by people with items in other states. Shipping is hurt badly in this economy and very negotiable right now.
If the reciever is paying shipping, I'd go with the easiest and take up on the $5 fee as mentioned above and be done with it. Pay some insurance and let THEM worry about it...

You could also put it on a Greyhound bus and buy it a ticket to his nearest terminal. I've known people who did that, and it's a very affordable option, just a little odd. Just out of curiosity, what do you get for a good Beetle hood in NY?

did the same with a ranger hood one time was like 40-50 to go to MI

Get one of those hand held rolls of stretch wrap from lowes and wrap it real good and take it to UPS.I've shipped several Dana 60 housings this way. They dont like it,but they take it.

On this note - if you could get somebody to come down as far as just north of Baltimore, you could use my house as a temp drop spot.
Hell I might even drive it up a bit for a fee.

I don't mind it being here a SHORT time period.
Depending on where in NY, it's only a few hours from here.

If the buyer is paying the shipping, they may not mind the drive.

This is how my Trail Gear winch mount/bumper base plate came.
just a giant ball of bubble wrap + tape.

Buuuut - for something that's bendable sheet metal... i wouldn't suggest it.

Where I work at we ship race car hoods all the time. We get a big box thats a little bit bigger than the hood then cut squares of foam out and slit then so you can slide them over some of the egdes of the hood so is kind of floating in the box and it works well. A race car hood is flatter then a VW hood though, but it might work we never had a problem with damage that I have ever heard of and we ship fedex. Just another idea for you.

Don't just put it on a pallet... crate it. You never know when some idiot is going to put something heavy or another pallet on top of it.

I'd stay away from UPS to ship a body part. I've never got one from there that wasn't beat into junk. Pretty sure they have a requirement that a minimum of one truck run over each package before it is delivered. I've shipped greyhound before and had no problems whatsoever.
