I know a lot of you guys have shops or have built shops at your homes, looking to build and need some pointers.
what style the best for the money
and such
needs to be at least 10ft for boat storage
thanks in advanced

Drop some chain cups in the floor. you might never have to straighten a frame, but they come in darn handy for other things, too (I don't have, but a friend does).

Level floor, as good as you can get it. Whether building furniture or bumpers, helps to have a level foundation to work off of.

I did 10' ceilings...assume that's what you mean (not a 10' boat) :) Go 12-14' if you might ever do a 2 post lift. I did 2' masonry wall with 8' stud wall on top.

Lots of outlets. And lights.

Doors...a 16' rollup door is really a single car door. My doors are 9'...still pretty close when backing in a trailer, or the mirrors on my F250. I'd go single 12' doors next go-round.

If you have enough lot, make one bay drive-through. (Bay doors on both sides of building.

My next shop will have a separate welding bay. Too much clutter and stuff in the main area to weld inside now. A separate welding bay (or at least a room) would be great.

Try and avoid posts altogether, but figure in at least one beam overhead, even if you have to pop in a post, for a chainfall.

Air compressor in an insulated closet (best if open to outside) for quiet.

Definitely a half-bath. (Or at least a sink (same thing for the guys)).

Shed roof, 10-12' on at least 2 sides....so all your collected junk and parts can get under cover.

Carport or overhang on front, so you can work outside and keep cool/dry.

AC and Heat. Really...my next shop will definitely have it.

great tips...thanks
need at least 10ft clearance for wakeboard tower on boat
so a 10x10 door w/ 12ft ceiling would be nice

Bunce Buildings

I got my shop built by Bunce, Was nice, came home it was done.
Well Half of it. Cost $4,100 Like it sits in this pic. 20X30 with 12 ft walls. Now heres where they try to get ya.
20X30 12 ft walls finished gable ends $4,100
Heres how much they wanted to finish the ends
$900 per end (8ps) 3X20 Sandstone Sheet Metal =$1,800. WTF
$150 garage door frameout ( This option should have knocked down the sheet metal price seeing its pre cut, But no change in price.
$50 Walk in door frame out
$500 Roll Up Door (Cheap crappy door)
$150 Walk in door. ( Mobile Home door with diamond window, Do I at least get a free roll of tin foil?
Long Story short, I finished both ends myself for $1,000. A grand bought the Sheet Metal, Hardware, Studs, Garage door.

Finished product Around $5,100. Good thing was I already had a 20X20 Concrete Pad. Call Bunce. American Steel, whoever there all the same.

If you need 10ft to get your boat in. I would go with a 12' door. You would hate to have to mess with the boat/trailer combo to get it in and out. But if your wake tower is really only 9ft tall then your good to go, but if it is right at 10ft step up to the next highest. I would want at least a foot clearance.

I know steel buildings are all the rage right now. But don't forget about a pole barn or even a block building. Block would probably be $$$ but I would look into it.
