I have been dealing with this for a while now. My jeep with sputter and go down to really low RPMs and then all of the sudden pop and go back to normal idle.

The weirdest part is that this god aweful smell :poop: comes from the tailpipe that is developing a black ring around it.

My question is, is this a bad cat and possibly 02 sensor? I have heard mixed feelings saying it may be the TPS in the intake manifold

thanks

I had the same issue on my jeep a few years back (96 ZJ) and it was the TPS I do believe.

Dang, and those things are expensive (~$50)

I wish the check engine light would come on so I could confirm that. Replacing a TPS would be a lot easier than a new exhaust though.

Do you know if you replace the TPS and it ends of not working will the manufacturer take it back for a refund?

Bad cat?

agree maf, tps etc. throwing O2 out of range, it then makes it too rich etc.

Most auto parts stores will not take back electronic products. Check a chiltons manual for the testing procedure of the sensors in question. Will need a multi meter to test.

the catalist is pretty easy to diagnos if you have a scan tool you would need to look at the wave pattern of the two oxygen sensors making sure the one behind the cat is not mirroring the front oxygen sensor that would tell if the cat is bad but most of the times you would get a DLC code saying something like catalist effeciency below threshold

give me the year and the motor. i might have a spair tbody for you with all the working sensors. try taking the tbody off and giving it a good clean. youd be surprised how gunked up they can get especially on the I6. brake cleaner is the best at it IMO
