I've been looking at the skid plates available for most applications and i don't see anything thinker than 3/16. is this really enough to be dropping onto? is there anyone out there making/using thicker or stronger skid plates?

i beat my stock jeep skid plate a bunch, not sure how thick it is, but i am guessing 1/8, and it handled everything.

3/16" is stupid thick. Build it out of 1/8" or thereabouts, and add gussets and ribs where appropriate. It'll be stronger and lighter than the alternative. It might still dent here and there, but it will keep the rocks out of your tcase and trans pan just fine.

Mine is 3/16" with 1/8" angle around the permieter.

It has a little bend in it in the middle from coming down on it at the DPG, but nothing big. 1/4" gets REAL heavy, real quick.

If you're looking at pre-fabbed skids, 3/16 is probably plenty.

I would have preferred 1/4, personally. But it's heavy as hell for the size of my skid. And, I got a smokin' deal on the 3/16". I think you'll like being able to beat the piss out of the 1/4" and still be able to remove it and reinstall it when needed.. ;)

I used 3/16" on mine and it is heavy & beefy!

What about rocksliders under the rocker panels? I came up with some 4"x4" angle iron thats 3/8" thick. They only need to be about 4' long. I'm just wondering if it'll be to heavy.

I had a 3/8" thick TC skid plate on my XJ before the long arms. It never bent. It was a 18"x24" plate I got from DH griffen for $10. I think it lowered my CG several inches...

They're going to be about 40# a piece, according to my math.

Still too thick for my thinking.... or too thin. If you want beef, you need some 3/4" cold rolled. :flipoff2:

My rockers are 1/4" 4x6 angle.

3/16" is HEAVY, should be plenty stout enough, 1/4" is overkill, but there is NO QUESTION it will pretty much hold up to anything you do while 4-wheeling

i know its not a great comparison but the POS 96 trooper i abuse these days has holes in one of the skid plates from being dropped hard or some rocks. i'll have to find out the thickness of it.
