Ok, I had a Jon/Chase put in the Trail-Gear 4.7 gearset in my tcase back in March and when I brought it home, I think everything was pretty "tight" as far as the shift pattern but just don't drive the truck much to KNOW 100% how it felt.
Since that point...I have noticed on my last trip or two that things have started feeling sloppy, and wanted to get some thoughts from you guys.
By sloppy, I mean after the last trail ride earlier this year, the shift pattern did not want to act the way I expected. I could not get it to go into 2HIGH, seemed to be in 4HIGH, drove it to eldorado and on the truck.
I must have got it back into 2high later, drove around some on the highway / it is possible it was in 4 high (front is not locked, hubs would be open)
J is the normal pattern... with upper right as 4LOW, pull back to do neutral and then 4 HIGH is lower left (off top of my head here)
And then to the upper left should be 4 HIGH.
So then I am up at dads property, shift around until I can tell it is LOW (and I am thinking 4LOW) Took off in the woods. I can tell a little bit that it is acting a bit odd on a short hill climb but I ignore that.
I then get into a tight trail and have to back out... and it is def acting odd and "walking sideways" downhill, I ended up with my left front fender in a tree before I knew it... something def up, ended up denting the fender badly, door and door post.
I am in LOW...but appears to be 2LOW!!!?? I know hubs are locked in, and I could be wrong but that is what it felt like.
I drive out, play with shifter a bit in the field until I am sure I am in 4LOW now and continue working for rest of day.
Later when we are getting ready to go home, had dad down watching front driveshaft and I am playing with shifter trying to find 2 HIGH.
At one point the front dshaft is NOT turning and yet I am in LOW!! (No front locker... not sure about hubs)
All this makes me wonder if the pin that holds the shift rails has come out, did not get put back in or has broke?
At one point I was going to have them twin stick it but ran out of time...and shifter was not in stock... so easily could have been thinking that and the pin was taken out on purpose, etc. (IOW I am in no way unhappy just tracking down my issue so I can get it working right)
So basically it "feels" sloppy... 4wd light does appear to come on for 4 HIGH but not 4 LOW..but again my 2 LOW and 4 LOW appear to be "close" etc.
Complicating this possibly is 3" of body lift... have not gotten under there enough to see if something is "loose" but based on pictures of what these look like not sure what a body lift would be hurting.
85 Toyota, 22r with G52 tranny according to the firewall. I am not sure if that means I have fwd shift OR the "combo" where tcase and tranny are both together?
If fwd shift - in theory I could order the twin stick and just bolt it on if that pin is already gone?
Any and all thoughts are welcomed, stuff to try out etc!!
Before
After the tree modification heh...hurt my dads feelings more than mine!
And yeah, won't be long before we knock it all out smooth again and repaint for the heck of it.
