SM465 pops out of third

Trying to get the k10 I picked up sorted out and the biggest issue is the transmission pops out of third gear when accelerating. I pulled the cover just to see what it looked like inside. Third gear can see some visible wear as expected. The coatings on the shift forks also look pretty worn…although 1-2 looks way more worn than 3-4. I haven’t pulled the top case apart to check out the detent springs. What are the odds it’s just forks and sorings vs pulling out synchros and gears? Any 4 speed gurus on here? @Shreddinlettuce

SM465 3rd Gear & Slider Update Kit (TorqueLock/Anti-Jump-Out)

The SM465 is pretty close to perfect in its design, but this update to 3rd gear and its slider are considered to be essential. The tapered clutch design prevents 3rd gear from kicking out under torque.

This won’t fix your issue, but an aluminum top cover from the later year 465 will reduce your shifter throw considerably, and give you much cleaner/crisper shifts…if you can find one.
You need both the shift lever and the top cover assembly (all of the forks and rails are different). The pivot ball is higher up on the aluminum ones creating the short throw

Yeah, yours might go missing at the GTG...Just saying
You won't have to look very long to figure out you're S.O.L. The SM465 I had was in my big block 1 ton square body suburban. That truck is long gone, along with the later model GM NV4500 I had that I never got around to swapping in it. The SM465 was very stout and never gave me any problems, except at the pump. The lack of an overdrive gear kept that 454 singin' and that needle constantly sweeping left.

Yea that’s left the sm465 when I did my 6.0 swap. The trans definitely tells me to slow down

I had big plans for my suburban…new crate big block with modern fuel injection, the NV4500 and some deeper axle gears would have turned that truck into a towing muhsheen. But I still wouldn’t have been able to hook up to a gooseneck, which is ultimately one of the main reasons I sent it on down the road.
