Small oil leak in jeep cherokee

I would bet its the valve cover gasket... You really have to be a lot more specific for people to give u ideas. Where is it coming from? Where on the engine oily???

yea i know i need to be more specific because theres such a broad range of things but im buying the jeep from a girl in winston and she has no idea what shes talkin about except that her mechanic said it might be a seal but she said the check engine light is on and the oil light is on so idk...im pretty much just wondering whats some of the more common ones and how hard are they to fix....

becareful, and oil light could be a number of things, and not to be a pig here, but if there was a serious problem, most women i know wouldnt know it.. A seal could be a bunch of things, but if its leaking quick enough, and that oil lights on, that means the oil is low, and now you have a engine thats been starved of oil... just proceed carefully.

Every cherokee leaks oil (it's what they were designed to do) No just kidding but if I had to bet i would say it's one of the main seals (rear or front). Also the o-ring where the oil filter attaches are notorius for going bad and leaking.

IF it isnt bad just leave it alone. You'll fix it and it'll come back within weeks or months...

I agree with Uncc..

The most common leaks we see on the 4.0 jeeps in our shop are the Rear Main seal, Oil filter adaptor orings, and valvecover gasket. The light coming on could be low oil or a bad oil sending unit. I would make sure to check it out a little further before committing.. If its been run low a little too many times and the light is coming on due to low oil pressure, that means there some bearing clearance issues and you need to be carefull..

Good luck on our purchase thou.

well thanks for the info and advice i am defenitely gonna check it out...my stepfather is a master mechanic but he refuses to help me(he only helps my friends lol...its "his way of teaching me")...so i kinda have to get all my info from here since so far its the best site ive found...

If the jeeps in winston then drive the 30 mins and go take it to a mechanic... i can give you the name of some if you need it. Pay them 50.00 to go over it and tell you what all is wrong w/ it.

Just my $0.02

You might ask him to help as in tell you what to do/how to best do it while he watches so if you're screwing something up he can catch it and explain the right way to do it. Hopefully he won't yell too much!

ill bet my ckee on it being a rear seal (just kidding on the bet). just about every ckee leaks from a rear or front seal.in its life time. most of the time you can replace them for cheap -labor lol and be done with the problem for a pretty good while. not sure where uncc coming from with a week or month? but its proablly a rear seal bad. not to much to worry about. if it dosnt bother you and its not a serious amount of oil dont worry about it. and if it bothers you its nothing that cant be fixed in an afternoon.

if your replaceing the clutch i would put a new seal in anyways even if it was still pretty good. because the seal is pretty cheap and your going to allready have the tranny down
