well, found the oil leak on my dd, 92 xcab 3 slow. turned out to be the valve cover gaskets dripping oil on the headers. also got reminded of what a bastard child the 3.0 is:mad:, especially since its been years since i've had my hands on one. how ridiculous is it to have to take the intake plenum, throttle body, egr metal line, and associated vent hoses off just to change a stinkin $18 gasket:handed:. then it cost $40 MORE to get the intake gasket set to replace the ones that broke comin off.:kaioken: 15 min and $18 for driver side, $58, trip to town, and 3 hours for passenger side. this is :poop:.........okay, rant over.:driver: double glad my wheeler is a 22re:shaking:

Im rebuilding one for a buddy and I was making fun of them having torque specs for the bottom end on the valve cover. But, when I went to assemble the rotating assembly, where did I look for the specs? The valve cover.

Not that this helps or anything but you take off about 3-5 vacuum lines, EGR, a bracket. Take the bolts and nuts off the intake and flip the upper intake over and lay it on the passenger inner fender and leave everything connected.
I do feel you pain though. I highly dislike those engines.

truth be told thats what i wound up doing. half way thru taking the bolts out i remembered thats the easy way. unbolting the throttle body keeps the other 6 PCVs and the coolant lines intact, at a cost of a gasket.(2.19 at advanceauto)

Am I mistaken thinking you have to do the same thing on the 3.4? (Intake off).

Just curious, are you being sarcastic here? Why do you like them so much?

I would figure its because other than Timing Belt, Water Pump and 02 Sensors...you rarely need to touch these motors. My old 4Runner now has 191k on it and is going strong.

Correct, timing belt and water pump and valve cover gaskets are a piece of cake. Never really had many 02 sensor problems. They do eat mass air sensors if you put on a K&N. Other than that they are dependable, strong, have very very few problems and are extremely simple. So no I'm not being sarcastic.....3.0 is a POS though.

Cool, I've got to do the drivers side VCG on mine and I've been putting it off cause I thought I had to take the intake off. Guess it's on for this weekend!

update............got both of em on the day of original post, ans now its still leakin somewhere. anywhere else up there oil can get out? this is really annoying me!

you should have used toyota silicone and put in the corners and also the valve covers tend to crack, the rear cam caps leak and you could just be having alot of blow by in the engine. i had a 3.0 in my truggy and needless to say it now has a 22r.
