I have verizon, was thinking about upgrading phones and would like something that is wi-fi capable, but don't want to pay the $30/month for the data plan. I figure if I am in a spot with Wi-fi I shouldn't be paying Verizon for internet usage....

Anyone know how to do this? They won't let you buy a smartphone without the data plan.

Maybe so, but myself (wife) and brothers all have smart phones w/o data plans through Verizon.. All we did was call them and tell them to put a data block on the phones...

But can you still access wifi? whats the point in having a smart phone if you don't use it? by an ipod and get free wifi and you can even do free video chat on the i pod.

Wifi has nothing to do w/ Verizon's data plan... if the host's internet isn't protected it's free for all...

The point... Just about every phone now days is a "smart phone"... I deal w/ computers all day and have no use to sit there on a 2-3" screen and access the internet/gps/whatever while paying $30 for it. The Ipod touch is nice and yeah it has wifi but obviously it doesn't make calls.

Now, i'm not saying if you tell Verizon you don't want your Iphone to have data they'll go along w/ it.. but we have 4 different smart phones (Not Droid or IPhone) and all work normal except they cannot access the net.

Not trying to start anything with you. I didn't realize that you could still access wifi, if you don't have a data plan on your phone, if you phone is indeed wifi capable. I thought about getting an ipod once and not having to buy a smart phone, but didn't want to have to carry around 2 devices everyday.
