Question for you guys with experience in wheeling. We are headed to the Outer Banks for two weeks in July and want to get a tow strap. Our vehicles are; 2000 F150 standard cab short bed and 1988 Cherokee XJ. What weight limit strap, strap size, and a Snatch Strap or Tow strap should we get?
Thanks

no less than a 20,000 I would think. Try your best to keep it out of the sand, as the sand is like little knives that will cut the fibers and cause it to fail

look specifically for a snatch strap. Dylan had a good ARB one we used this weekend at the ECORS race and it worked wonders over the tow strap I had.

Get at a minimum of 20K#

Just drop the tire pressure to 15-20 and dont worry about a strap.

Got around last year with out dropping tire pressure and that was at the just opened point, but it never hurts to be safe.

UGG...getting to the surf sucks. I can't wait until my Jeep is back together. :D

Last year the Hatteras Point opened the the day before and we went out for morning fishing, damn that sand was soft and thick.

I was out there last year, shouldn't have a problem unless you go up into the dunes. BTW, I was driving a loaded down Yukon (5 passengers + gear). I aired down to 17 and had no problems.

Oh, a tip: afterwards take the car to Autobell. Have them clean that mess instead of you .

Thanks to Brad Carrier for the ARB strap

I would recommend one to everyone. These straps will blow your mind the way they work. I wouldnt really recommend using one as a winch extension tho..they really stretch alot.

Where specifically are you going? I know some areas used to be jerks about fining people when they used a tow strap.

We stay in Frisco, and hang out on Frisco, Hatteras, and Ocracoke beach. Never had a problem in 20 years with getting stuck or rude people but it's always good to be prepaired. For our two weeks we bring two trucks and have friends that stay the same two week with their trucks.

$85 for a strap!? Screw that... Go to HF and get you one, they work fine.

When you there stuck for a while, I bet you'd pay $100 or more

The absolute best SNATCH strap I've ever had/used was $10 from a surplus dive in J'ville. Guessing was from some type of parachute gear (for equipment, not people)?

It was OD nylon strapping, about 40' long x 1"-1.5" wide, looped 7-8 times to create the end loops, & sewn the entire length... made it actually square down the length.

Sucker would stretch about 1/3 of it's length when loaded! I was able to pull out a stuck FS Chevy down at Highrock (when the old "Wild Life" ramp/mudfest was in full swing) with my :poop: little Nice'an 4x4... Someone eventually decided they needed it more than me and lifted it on a job site.

Best trick I've seen for getting out solo:

1. Take some expanded steel a little wider than your tires and about 4 foot long.
2. Dig out infront of your rear tires so you can get the steel just under the edge of your tire, Lay it down in front of your rear tires
3. Strap from the leading edge of the expanded steel to your bumper or rear of vehicle.
4.Now Drive out and the straps will tow the expanded steel behind you until you can get to a place to stop with out getting stuck again.

Hatteras sand is like no other, rotten spots pop outta nowhere.

Most important thing is to air down, we pulled a 2500 reg cab gasser chevy out that had 65#s in his tires.
And punching it doesnt help dirtymaxes get anywhere either :)

I have dug my fair share of people out down there, and pulled them out.

You goin to do some fishing?
