Man, it seems everywhere i go, everyone i talk to hates snow. Why is this? Is it caused from living where snow is on the ground all winter long? Is it caused by being a puss and not being able to take the cold weather? Is it the inconvienence that it causes you maybe once or twice a year? Is it the fact that you don't remember what it was like to be kid and be off school and play in the snow?

I can't understand it. Am i the only one who LOVES the snow? I seriously think that snow is the reason i refuse to own a car. I am so stoked everytime it snows, i can't wait to take out one of the three 4x4s in my driveway. When it snows its like every public road becomes a wheeling trip. What is so bad about that? [rant off]

i'm with you all the way on that I love the snow and the way it makes everything look. I love driving in it, This will be my first real year of snow with the yota. I hope we get something good at least a foot or so.

I like snow myself but I could see why someone round here would hate it if they're going to blame it for people overreacting and being complete idiots when it does come.
I'm originally from central PA and I know plenty of people there who hate the snow; when it starts snowing around the 1st of October you know you're gonna have a long winter ahead of ya(and 10ft snow drifts quickly start looking like mountains of shit) I was up for the opening wk of spring turkey and we got snowed on twice-thats the 1st wk of MAY!!!

I love it myself. If it don't snow here, I usually go up thru Spruce Pine, Bakersville, Burnsville, Roan Mnt, over to Banner Elk, Beech Mnt, go to the slopes, sit in the lodge drink coffee and watch the skiers. I have done this several years(more than willing to admitt) and will continue to go. I imagine if I had to live where it snowed all the time it would get old fast. This year I have a scrape blade for my tractor. So at least I will be able to scrape my drive. My drive is the last thing to thaw, so that'll help a lot. Might even make a few bucks like I did when I was younger!

i hate snow, just never have been a big fan, other than the bonfires on the golfcourses in high school

i hate cold, because its cold and stuff

i hate how people down here cant drive, especially in the snow..no further explanation needed i dont think

i hate how local govts freak out, and dont prepare adequately, which doesnt help with the above point

oh and by the way, this exam that i am studyin for.....yea, i hate as well

Can Charlotte handle a foot?

i love the snow, because i get to work 40 hours in 3 days, then they wont let me get over time so i get a few days off to enjoy it.

Love the snow.

Also love the yankees that come down here and say we can't drive in snow. Yes there are some idiots that can't, but when that yankee steps out the door the first time and falls on his @$$ it's so funny.

We don't just get snow around here. First it rains, then snows on it (slush), then freezes, then snow on top of that, then more rain, which freezes of course. Then the ground underneath is usually warmer, so you have the slick as anything you ever seen, layered ice-snow-water-ice-slush that refreezes overnight crap that you can hardly stand on, much less drive.

Snow, now that's easy to drive in.

We (wife and I) have a love/hate relationship w/ snow.
We went to college in Boone, got plenty of it then, were always sick of it by March.
But then when it snows here, it reminds us of that time and makes us happy.
But, then it's cold, and she hates that.
Wife teaches 6th grade - so yeah, when they cancel school she's LOVIN' it (if you underage kids think it sucks being the student, that ain't nothin').
But, then she loses all the workdays and vacation time, and hatesi t again.

...and so on it goes...

If it's gonna be cold, and especially cold AND wet, dammit, let it snow then...

4 words from my morning commute today: "Bridge freezes before road".. (Was trying to make a left turn arrow before it went red and was WOT across the I-40/751 bridge, and the truck got about 20-25° sideways.. Musta looked pretty wild from behind, sure was fun from my seat! wheeee!...)

I am another fan of the snow. I don't miss the cold of the northern plains where we moved from but I do miss the snow. Luckily the mountains are only an hour or so from me so I still get to play in it.

The Beast - It's true, you can't drive in the snow down here. Neither can you (collectively) handle a little cold weather which is why it took me 30 minutes to get on to the interstate from my house (which is less than a mile) this morning because everyone was tiptoeing across the Yadkin River bridge on I40. :flipoff2:

Well I grew up in Pittsburgh and either walked or took a bus or streetcar everywhere. Riding those in snow was no biggie. Walking in it could be fun.

Then I joined the Army and spent 6 winters in Germany. Now, THAT's snow country! And yeah, a few times I've seen tanks slide off the road. Fortunately, not into or over anything more vital than a hay shed.

And THEN... I moved to New Jersey. They'll get about ten inches maybe, and every now and then a couple feet. Not so much fun, riding or walking. But I managed it in a 2WD S10... while watching SUV's and 4X4's zig, zag and slide all over because they forgot that when those big tires try to stop spinning, they slide just as good as everyone else's. ;)

Amazingly enough, there are a lot of those down here in NC, too. Hmm. Not sayin' that includes any of YOU guys...

And in conclusion.... (yeah, I know, about damn time) I'd a whole lot rather drive on a foot of snow than 1/8 inch of ice.

Winter up north is different.

The road crews are prepared for it.
The people are used to it.
The roads have wider shoulders (usually) so there is a place to push the white sh*t when it dumps another 2 feet on you before the last 3 feet melts.
And I could go on.

My last winter up north, we went about 3 weeks never got above zero. anywhere from 3 - 5 feet of the white stuff most of the winter.
I spent all winter fixing broken snow plows and defrosting frozen water mains.

F- That.
I ain't going back.

I still don't really mind the snow -- for the first few days.
But the ice we get around here is a whole 'nother aminal.
I'll take a foot of snow over an ice storm ANY day.

Yeah, I have seen a little snow.

If ya care.
Here are a couple pics where I am originally from taken about 25 years apart.

Very true. I think that should be the people get used to it. That first dusting of the year that turns to immediate ice on the pavement up north was always interesting. I used to manage a store that was at the bottom of a hill on a busy road in Minneapolis. The first couple of winter weather days they drove like idiots while everyone figured out how to drive in it again. We would sit in front of the big plate glass window and watch the chaos. It was like bowling with cars.

I'll just pass along a tip I learned in Germany. If it's slick snow and/or ICE, keep the right-side wheels (track) in dirt or grass as much as you possibly can. The ice on that will crunch down and give at least a LITTLE traction, unlike the stuff that's already had 90,000 other wheels packing it down tight.

May none of us need to use it this year...
