I've taken my oldest a few times the past couple years (he was 4, almost 5 the first time, now 6), but the gnarlier stuff (or what seems gnarly to a kid) can be pretty scary to him. I'd almost prefer to have more of a (gasp!) Jeep or buggy so he could better see what was going on. And he just needs to get used to the off-camber feeling too. The kids WANT to go because they like watching dirt every day and going to monster jam and stuff like that. I hope to spend a lot more time with them on the trail as they all get big enough for it and while they still like hanging with their dad.
