So I need to knock over some stumps/small trees

And move a little dirt etc.
Biggest stump I need to knock over is going to be less than 10" The small trees, 2-3" I'm hoping to just kind of shove over, instead of cutting them first. (laziness)

Was thinking of renting a skid steer, and maybe the back hoe attachment for some of the bigger stumps?

Any idea what size to rent? Was thinking of just renting it for the week, so I'd have time, (that and it will take 2-3 days at least, and that seems to cost about 50$ less than for the whole week?)

Anyone got any recommendations in the Raleigh area for renting one? (Or anyone have one and want to rent it the weekend of the 19th?)

Thanks for any advice/suggestions.

I just cut some of the roots and winch out the stumps. The biggest stumps I drill a few holes and pour stump remover in it found at lowes or home depot. Using stump remover is goin to be your lazy option.

stump remover, more fun than a bobcat:

You young'uns won't believe it...but used to be you could just walk into the FCX and buy it over the counter.

When I was younger us kids would sit on the porch and watch my Dad and uncles remove stumps with TNT and a 22 rifle. They bought it through the railroad.

I take it there's no legal place to buy whole dynamite sticks for the general public?

I think nowadays you have to be certified, fingerprinted, pass a colonoscopy, etc. And the government has to keep track of it and you.

dynamite isnt really used anymore....I doubt what you'd buy that they call dynamite is actually the original mix.

Its highly unstable, so they've moved on to better options.

Hscrugby, how many trees you talkin bout? Are you clearing a field or yard? Is it accessible to a fullsize truck? Would you like a hand? I could take an afternoon that weekend and help out.

Well it's my back yard,
we're redoing the whole thing for a pool in the spring, so it's accessible to anything.
Aka, I don't care if I tear up the yard :)
Planning on doing it Sept 18-21.

To give an idea of what I'm talking about, see the pic.
The black X's have already been cut. (paid someone) but he was WAY to pricey to clean up the smaller stuff.
Biggest tree i'm dealing with is maybe 10" diameter? most are 3-6"
but they are all stupid little flexy trees so I couldn't seem to pull out the stumps. They just kept bending and or tearing.

The red line is the area I'm talking about, the red ? if I'm bored/have time I might clean up too.
The yellow is about my property lines.
Or somewhere in there, either way, I own more than what I'm cutting. :)
And it's plenty of room, so I won't accidentally cut something not mine. :D

I rented a Bobcat from Triangle equipment (The place at the corner of Glenwood and Westgate) last year ....I think I got it for a weekend for 275. ...you could prolly get the 3-6 inchers out with just the bucket. The 10" stumps will probably require the bucket attachment.
If I wasn't racing that weekend, I'd bring my Jeep, winch, and saw over & help.
Steve

got an away game that sat. but I can help out some fri and sunday if you need a hand. And hey, it'll be a good reason for me to bring your stuff back

Yea, main reasons I'm looking at a bobcat are:
1. There is poison ivy back there, i'm tired of getting it.
2. It's fun to drive random pieces of equipment, as long as it isn't your job. Then it's just boring.
3. I'm lazy, and having heavy (medium weight?) equipment seems easier than doing it by hand, then using a stump grinder.

So yea, if anyone wants to come help, my dad and I (somehow I conned him into coming down for that weekend. That'll learn him to retire) will be out cutting things/making a mess from Thursday till probably Monday.
I'll provide food and beverages, propel for some, tasty pints for others.
(maybe the pints AFTER done with bobcat/chainsaw)

I know you're planning on putting a pool in the back, but it looks like you're going to cut down every tree on your property...hardwoods at that. Tired of raking?

1) cordless drill and 3 inch hole saw.
2) half pound of black powder.
3) Lots of fuse.

varying the amount of powder will adjust the number of trees that can be taken out at once.

welllll,
while amusing, I don't need to launch any trees at incoming jets.
(If you draw a straight line from the rdu north runway, it goes over my backyard. :D )

But they're dropping the bobcat off Friday afternoon, and picking it up Monday morning. That should give me time to properly hurt myself.
I mean, ermm knock down the trees.
:)

raking, nah. I got attachments for the riding mower for that :flipoff2:

Most of the houses around the front and back that were already dropped were either right where the pool is going, or were leaning towards the house and mostly dead.
Then the one way off to the side near my neighbor pissed me off.
Dropped a big ____nut and cracked me right in the shoulder while i was cutting the grass one day.
So vengeance was mine.

Still going to have lots of trees around us, and around the pool. But lots fewer :D
