So... if a tree falls in the woods and nobody is around

Well, we need to define "it", but assuming "it" is the tree, then the answer is no. The sound is produced by the impact between the tree and the substrate in which is resides. The object being hit makes the sound. For example, if you hit your thumb with a hammer, the hammer doesn't make a noise, you do.

jeepin brings up a good point.

yes, in general, a noise is made. But, is the noise made by the tree or what the tree lands on?

a sound is an audable noise that is heard.... so there for with no one to hear there is no sound

Yes and no. Sound is the brain's interpretation of vibration caused by the tree hitting the ground. Without a brain there to make it "sound", it's simply vibration. Just as color is the brain's interpretation of the reflection/absorption of light. There is really no "right" way to see color.

Am I right, Dave? :bounce2:
