I am making good progress.

Just wondering. The inner pinion bearing race (the bearing that's pressed on) has a thin metal thingy behind it. Is that the inner pinion bearing oil baffle? And how am I supposed to remove the race without destroying this thing? Also, isn't the pinion depth set by using shims behind that race? How are you supposed to repeatedly install it and remove it when setting up gears?

The factory put it there for a reason. I'd keep it. If you don't, make sure you replace it with the same thickness in shims.

Have always used the oil slinger when it was on the original install. Don't want the bearing to ever run dry.
I don't think he is refering to the oil slinger on the pinion itself, but the oil baffel that is sometimes used in dana axles on the inner race in the housing.
You can reuse it if you are careful each time you remove it.
Setting up ring & pinions properly is all about taking your time and having the proper tools.

Not the slinger

Those aren't a problem to remove without damaging. It's the baffle sandwiched between the inner race and the housing.

What tools do I need to remove that inner race without damaging the baffle?

I think that slings oil up to the ceiling of the housing so it can run down to the rear (small) pinion bearing. The ring gear doesn't sling oil up there like a rear axle does.

Ok

How does the bearing race punches get me around the baffle? I am suspecting that you have to replace it each time, and for gear setup you just use a shim in its place until the final install. I see no other way to remove the race without destroying it.

PS.
I think some of you are confusing baffle and slinger.
