ok so i made one of my new years resolutions already. problem is i gotto to get rid of one of my 4x4s. Now the problem is i dont know which one i wanna let go of. I have and 87 4runner and a 96 xj. im still kinda new at the whole 4x4 thing so i dont know which one i wanna build. any help or opinions would be great.
87 4runner
the good:
full frame
already runs and drives
removable top
toyota
31x10.5
cheap inspection
low milage drivetrain
the bad:
exhaust split in half under the manifold
automatic hubs bad
older
IFS
high mileage body(still very clean)
harder to mod
96 xj
the good:
straight axle
jeep
I6 w/ mods
clean interior
4x4 works
easier to mod
the bad:
needs lower radiator brace welded on
not full frame
stock tires
cant get as much money in current condition.
so there i am. help!

I'm guessing since he mentioned the cheap inspection for the yota it'll be mix use.

^^ thats important... but...

4Runner IMO.
The exhaust is easy to fix.
High mileage/age is kind of irrelevant on these trucks, they go forever.
yes the IFS lift options are pretty limited, but until you go SAS it can be done to run 33s really cheaply

yea its gonna be a mix. brothers got a tj so i wanna be able to somewhat follow him, but i also need something to haul my harley around. i just dont wanna be limited by the IFS. i know there is options to beef it and SAS isnt in the budget.

People dont give the IFS enough credit. 33s can be achieved fairly cheap.

1.5" ball joint spacer $199 4crawler
2" longer shakle $75 or so
Add A Leaf $??
Lockrite or spartan locker <$300

For less than $700 you can run 33s and be locked.

How much would it take to put 33s on a jeep.

I say keep the Runner. these are more and more rare. Extremely versitile, Take off the top, doors, and Boom like a Jeep w/ more room. The exhaust is a simple fix. Used parts are easy to find. I have found the IFS to be very reliable, the SAS is relatively inexpensive, and as previously mentioned, these things run forever. Also aftermarket adapters are readily available.

I won't offer any input on which you should keep as it's kind of a personal preference but if you sale the XJ drop me a PM with a price and some more details :)

I forgot to mention what my job is. i am the general manager of a salvage yard with right at 1800 cars and trucks. the jeep has all the parts to fix it bc i have about 16 xjs on the yard. the toyota i have like 4 and none are 1st gens and i only have like one 4wd. i guess thats what was scaring me with the yota. thanks for the input guys

just b/c you don't have them, dosn't mean they don't exist ;-)
Parts are out there, and in face they get sold here as parts vehicles all the time - just check the FS section.
But part of the key here is that you won't need parts so often anyway, and the few things that are common failures are either available aftermarket, or have lots of documentation online to fix.

And yeah I agree the IFS doesn't get enough credit, its pretty stout unless you are running pretty big tires and are relentless on it. make a good skid plate and truss and it'll plow right through wherever you want to go.

Not alot at all.

Fender Trimming : Free
V8 ZJ coils + Coil Spacers, $40 for spacers, $20 for coils from JY
Bastard Pack rear, roughly $30 bucks depending where you get your leafs.
$75 for shackles
Same locker <$300

Jeeps are cheap and easy, especially the XJ's

i know its out there and trust me i know the ease of getting something shipped. i guess my impatience is what hurts me the most. ive already looked into the bastard packs and what not. i guess since the toyota is the easiest one to fix the jeeps gonna have to take a trip. i guess 4sale section here i come. thanks for the help guys. if anyone needs help with some OEM parts send me a PM. wouldnt mind helping those who are so willing to help me.
