Speedo Calibration

Well. I got my first speeding ticket (well, first ticket period) on Saturday. Apparently I was doing 88 in a 70. Now, I know I wasn't doing 70, but I sure as heck wasn't doing 88, according to my speedo. What's a good place to get calibrations done. Can the dealership do it?

On another note, the area which I got my ticket is about 6 hours from me. I don't really feel like driving down there for the day to go to court. Is there anyway besides that I can prove my speedometer was off? Is it possible to mail them a "calibration form" or something? Or am I just SOL?

Get a lawer and tell them to ask for improper equipment. Thats a non moving violation and most of the time the lawer can get it without a calibration. All the court really cares about is getting your court costs which you will have to pay no matter what. So the judge will usually agree to improper equipment. Thats no licenese points and no insurance points. Its almost always worth the extra $50 or $100 to the attourney for handleing it and you dont even have to go to court.

With the excessive speed GET A LAWYER. Look one up from that county on the internet or phonebook. They will tell you whether or not you need to show up to court.

85+, you need a lawyer.

No knock on Andy, I tried to hook up with him and I'm sure his method works but I had to go to a shop that had a "certified speedometer calibration technician".
I went to court myself and the DA knocked it down to Improper Equipment. Court costs and $25.00 fine and I was outta there in 2 hours.
You need to get this knocked down or your insurance will go up considerably, just call your agent and see.

I'll also vouch for the lawyer.
If you want to do it yourself, you can do it; you will need:
Speedo calibration, cost anywhere from $30-$65
Pay fine, $35 (in Forsyth anyway)
Pay court costs ($110)
Day off work + gas = who knows

I just went through this; lawyer cost me $240 total, that's basically $70 for the lawyer and the rest for fees/fines. Add up the above and decide if its worth $70 to you. That's less than 1 days work for me, not to mention gas expenses.

I have noticed that when ever a ticket is written lately half a dozen lawers will send you an advertisement for services.

If you get a lawyer you'll be fine, i've had 2 in 2 weeks and they both got reduced and one got dropped. Just don't let your lawyer do a prayer for judgement, if you have that and get another ticket within a year or two then the previous ticket comes back and the fines may double but i'm not real certain about that.
