Thinking about making a Dana 44 floater. Everything needed is on old CJs except the shafts.

Is there anyone that can cut course splines (19 x 10 spline)? I have access to some free used stock car axles (Forged 4140 steel!) for stock material.

Thx

butchcj-8 here on the board does all kinds of axle splining. What kind of hubs do you plan on using?

think i asked him once and he said he couldn't cut that course of a spline. Prob not many folks still have tooling to do the wide splines

Hubs will be stock old Jeep drive plates until I stumble upon a set of old ("cheap") lock out hubs.

Tried to get them to cut down a full size shaft to fit my EB width 44 and respline. He told me I couldn't afford for him to do the work:rolleyes: Good luck with them...

He has done work for me many times. Maybe it was your spline count, who did you speak to??

I should be able to do it now. We are splining a coupel different ways now. But it will be slightly higher to to them than a standard spline that we are set up to do everyday. I would need your old shafts and hubs plus your new axle blanks. You can call me if you want Thanks Butch

I have read about people having problems with the shafts pushing out on the hubs until they fail.

Butch;
Ill give ya a call about this. This may get the project rollin again! Thanks!

19 spline by 10, (10 is the outer), or possibly 30 x 10, depending on which carrier I decide to use.

This is bout always caused by insufficient endplay in the axles. They get hot and expand. Our race cars will do this if we dont leave about a 1/4" on the end of each shaft for expansion. Also gotta grease em or they will "fret" their way thru the hubs!

It was a simple 30 spline 1/2 ton 44 shaft. I spoke with Tim Williams. I remember very well. I thought to myself if I had drove up in a brand new truck with a fancy "I work for a race team" shirt instead of my beat up old Ford wearing a flannel and tee, I probably would have had my axle cut and splined.

Don't want to start another vendor bashing thread, but Midstate was highly recommended to me. I work with several people who either grew up in the area or worked for them at one time or another. I've never seen any bad work or heard anything bad about their products. I just the little guy like me wasn't important enough to work with.
