I have a swamp buggy I am working on and I appear to have an AMC 20 rear, the passenger side is a one piece and the driver side is a two piece. In the past my experience with two piece axles for these rears there is a shear key, however when I pulled the hub off the axle there was no sheer key just spline that goes to back of hub........does this make sense to anyone? If this is normal then what should the thickness on the spline be? Thanks for your help.

There should be a Woodruf key although it is the splines that prevent the hub from spinning if the proper torque has been maintained. If the key is missing it is likely that the hub has spun. This is quite common, I have seen very many that the axle nut was loose and there was a spun hub.

Also the splines are cut into the hub by the splines on the axle. When the hub is installed the first time it takes alot more than the 250 lb./ft to seat it to the correct dimension and get good splines.
