I am working on modifying my 89 cherokee and I am wondering which is best locker or spool? What are the pros and cons of both. Are these my only options? For now I am working with stock axles due to funds. Future may bring other axle options.

What kind of wheeling do you plan on doing, tire size, ect?

I would recommend a lock-right or the like in the front maybe even upgrade to one piece shafts with bigger u-joints. If it still has the D35 in the rear I would not wast any time or money on it just save for an axle swap.

I've got a D35 with welded spiders I'll let go for $80. It's got 3.55 gears and will bolt right in. If you're plannin on going bigger than 33's I'd just save for an axle swap. I wouldn't ever invest anything into a D35 other than welding the spiders. Just not worth it when you can put a D44, 8.8 or 9 under it for less than the locker would cost. In addition you will save alot of money on not having to buy a bunch of spare shafts.

yeah what they said. do the 8.8 swap it seems to be the most popular/easiest then lock it up. if its a street rig get a locker. off road only spool.

For now I am setting it up for trail riding and most of URE, I don't want to get it so my boy can't handle it when he gets to where he can drive it. Gotta work him up to extreme stuff. We have some 31 for it that we got free with a set of wheels that we bought and have started minor fender mods for tire rub. 3" lift is next, boy is saving his pennies hahahaha.

If you want him to learn to DRIVE, leave it open.
I have seen good drivers with under-equipped rigs make "checkbook" buggies look plain stupid.

Case in point. I have seen this rig (RIP) flat out embarrass some $20-30k buggies...

don't spool or weld either. as stated before that 35 is not to be messed with. you run the risk of breaking it with a locker or spool. the front 30 can handle 31's and a locker. As for a learning rig keep it open, air down and wheel it.
