Anyone ever done this before? I have never seen it done, but thought it might be kind of cool. i tried painting my top with rustoleum hammered spray, but it looks like shit. i sanded, primed, and put multiple layers on but it was splotchy even though i sprayed it even. wanted to see if anybody had ever herculined, line-x or rhinolined a top before.

I think the weight and flex of the top would keep me from doing it

I don't know what kind of vehicle you are working with, but my top on my bronco is very heavy and I think that would just add unnecessary weight. I would try some type of paint that comes out thick similar to line-x but not as thick, I think that would help cover up imperfections.

Swing by NAPA and pick up a Raptor Liner kit, you can spray it pretty thin and still get good coverage without adding the ton of wieght that line-x or Rhino would, and should hae enough left out of the kit to do floor and wheel wells.

any ppg paint store will carry SEM liner in any color for about $180. a shultz gun to spray it is twenty more. just srayed my super duty bed last week, you can't tell it from the rhino brand in my previous truck. i wouldn't be concerned with the weight as your only talking about 15lbs or so...but have you ever actually seen a vehicle with liner on the exterior? might be kinda :gay:

The Raptor I mentioned is only about $90. And most seem to think the liner on my rockers and flares on the ZJ is sexy as hell.

I spray Line-x in charlotte/concord and have done multiple TJ/YJ tops before and i think i have done a bronco top too, it does not add really any add weight that you can tell. It doesn't have to be as thick as in a truck app. so you are not adding that much material. As for those roll ons and regular paint you are just wasting your time, i went through that before i sprayed mine

Should be fine. You wouldn't really need it thick since it is just on a top. I spray Scorpion up here in Raleigh. If you are interested, I have a couple of Al's Liner kits here I could sell you. PM me if you are interested, this stuff is better than any other DIY kit on the market and is 100% UV stable and color matchable. :)

Line-X it. Might cost you a bit more up front but you'll be happier in the long run.

You'll never be able to tell the difference in weight. Like Carolina YJ said, it doesn't go on a top as thick as it does in a truck bed.

I also spray Line-X and have done several tops. The coolest one was on a 68 mustang that the guy didn't want to have re-vinyled. It actually turned out looking pretty good.

go with carolina yj he knows his line-x, everything else is a wast of time and money
he has done multiple sets of tj flares, rock sliders for us and its bulletproof

That's a kick ass idea, vynil topped muscle cars almost always have enough surface rust under the top to kinda rule out painting it without major, major prep to avoid seeing the pits, and the line-x will keep moisture out, for good. Gonna have to share this one with all the classic car guys I run with.

With the SEM or Raptor liner you can shoot at a slightly lowered pressure, or remove the little end nozzle of the gun and get a smoother texture. Haven't used much of the SEM, the Raptor seems to hold up decent against fading. Either can be topcoated with paint or clearcoat, but that kinda defeats the purpose.

line-x !!! dont do the sem wranglermandit done his yj top with it and withen 6 months the roof has faded from black to gray and its a little rough in texture and holds dirt

The Line-X in my truck has faded to grey and has a marbelized look. It looks like total shit. Whoever did it did a terrible job. Not saying Line-X sucks, just whoever did the job sucks.

Any coating is like a paint job, just make sure you have someone who knows their shit to do it or else it will turn out like crap.
