Hi guys,

I have a friend who has a 76 Jeep. We were wondering if his starter would work in my 98 cherokee?

I know my cherokee is an AMC, does that matter?

Will not fit.

Probably not your starter, guessing the neutral safety switch, try putting it in neutral to start, or if that does not work, push the park lever forward as far as it will go while turning the key over

83bronco,

I crawled under there to measure it and wow....I am thinking maybe it is all the crud on the connections that might be interfering with it?

When I turn the key and it wont start and I bang on the starter it fires right up...it only gives me trouble when I start it, move or drive for five minutes, shut it down then try to restart it within a few minutes of shutting it off...if you follow what I am saying.

Does that make sense to you guys?

Okay, is this in the transmission? Cause if it is, a Toyota tranny was put in my jeep.

Could it still be this problem?

I would check all the ground wires first and clean the rest of the connections real well.

Thank you wrangler!

Yes...I don't know why he put it in there, but it is a yota tranny.

I gotta see this conglomeration! I didn't know anybody made an adapter for that, but I guess anything's possible! Anyway, from the symptoms you're describing, you're probably on the right track with the starter. If you can't find one cheap enough at the parts store, I'm sure somebody around here gots one. And your 98 isn't an AMC, it's a Chrysler. His is an AMC.

there is a guy in the for sale section parting out an XJ. see what he wants for the starter.

"Someone" reminded me my starter is a free lifetime placement from Autozone.....thanks for all the help guys!!!

I'll get some up soon...
