so my grandpa has an 83 jeep CJ7 at his farm, and it hasnt even been driven/cranked in probably 2 or 3 years.

well i have made it my new project to get it in running order.

went out today and put new fluids in it and wires/plugs. and new gas.

well after that the jeep canks but doesnt turn over. UNLESS i pour a tiny bit of gas into the carb. then that will give it enough to start but it shortly dies after that gas is used up.
runs as smooth as anything while running. just seems as if its not getting gas. at ALL. does this seem to be more of a fuel pump problem or a carb problem. i havent cleaned the carb at ALL. nor did i take the fuel line off to see if fuel was even pumping through.

i guess i am just looking for any tips of any sorts.

PS: amc 258 4.2L

#1 any gas in the tank after 2 years is probably as flamable as water.
It may have separated, but I certainly wouldnt want the gummy stuff in my carb...

If you already drained refilled the tank, it may take it running for several long seconds to get the lines back pumped full, and your filter maybe clogged slam up.

A good starting point would be to pull the supply line off the fuel pump and put a piece of hose into the FP and into a gas jug set nearby. If it cranks and runs then pump and all is good, and you can go back from there. After checking the filter you can try blowing air back into the tank and having someone listen for bubbling at the gas fill.

EVERY Jeep I have ever owned, that has sit for a length of time, has had to have a new fuel pump. What has happened to me in the past is the diafram in the pump has cracked. I also found that some running by pouring gas in the carb resulted in a crankcase with gas in it.

yea i've had numerous people tell me to pull the carb, clean it very well, rebuild it and throw it back on. so i'll probably do that next weekend since a rebuild kit its 15 bucks. hope that works.

also, does anybody have a good place for info on an 83 CJ. something that would tell me more about the fuel pump, etc etc.

thanks for the help all.

Fuel pump is pretty straight forward. one gas line in and 2 out on your model(I think) One of the outs go to your carb, one is a return to the tank. Gasket and that's it. The arm that goes in fits up under a rod that runs off the cam. get the arm under the rod and bolt it down. it is a lubricated area so sealant should be used. attach the lines and that part is finished.
Lots of vacuum lines to this year card so make sure they aren't cracked and sucking air.

What Carb is on that '83? If I'm not mistaken the '83 I-6 has the Carter BBD. if it doesn't do this:
1. remove carb
2. Throw as far away from CJ as possible
3. Go to Junkyard and get MC2100 ($20)
4. go to Parts store and get rebuild kit ($30)
5. Get a It is the 2 barrel Rochestor to 2 barrel Holley adapter.
6. Rebuild and install carb with Adpater
7. do the Nutter Bypass (not a dance, but wiring bypass)

More Detailed info here. (Oh, and I thnk his $150 estimate is a bit high)

^ correct its got the crappy carter. and that has been through my brain. i've read a lot od good stuff about the mc2100. thanks for the info and link!
