I am looking for a good place to buy steel from in the W-S area. I have used Fishel Steel in the past, but would like some other options for tubing. Fishel has 1 3/4 OD X .125 in 25 ft sticks for around $65. Anyone know anywhere else for tube projects. I have talked to others that used 1 3/4 ID Schedule 40 pipe for their tube buggies see posting pic. Thanks for any help.

I was just making phone calls to different places. I am gathering all of the parts and steel to go through with my buggy build up soon. Another place I have found is Stock Car Steel in Mooresville. They have 1 3/4 OD x .093 DOM in 24 ft sticks for around $70 - That is the Nascar roll cage spec, but I think I would need something a little thicker for the bottom chassis were it could come in contact with rocks. I don't know, but I do know that I will give Dillon Suplly a call tomorrow. Thank you for the response.

haha, dillon supply is the biggest ripoff for any steel...way overpriced. Try Sanford Steel or PM Tube. Maybe a bit out of your way, but if you can save a few bucks its worth it.

And, IMO I would go thicker than .093. My bottom 2 main runners are 1 7/8 .134 wall and I dented one already from contact with rocks.

Well thanks to the both of you I will try both tomorrow and respond back. Raleigh isn't that far if it would be worth the drive. StudNuts, what you are bending the .134 with?? Do you need another 727?

I got a jd2. I bent .250 wall with it before. You just have to weld a gusset on the tube securer thing to the die base. I can get a pic in the morning of how I did it.

Ive got 2 tf727s now. dont think I need another one unless its free or close to it :)

Good deal, do you have any pics of you Buggy listed? Is you JD2 converted to hydraulic or manual? I know they are good benders people on other forums love them. As for the 727 I was just asking - I had one laying around hooked to a 318 I acquired from a W200 and I saw you were running one.

the dillon here in raleigh has really good prices, maybe they dont all quote you the same thing. sorry to hijack, but where can i get a 2"x3"x1/4 peice of plate? im going to build a skid for the truck, but i think i will have to buy a 4x8 sheet at dillon.

2" x 3" x 1/4"? You'll pay a little, but for such a small piece, go to Lowe's.

If, on the other hand, you meant 2' x 3', that's another story. Maybe see if someone else needs some 1/4"...

StudNuts - I cannot find the number for Sanford Steel or PM tube down in Raleigh. If you could look them up that would help me out. I called Dillon Supply and they had 1.9 OD schedule 40 pipe, 21 ft for $42.14. That is pretty good, but I have used your resources yet.

Sanford Steel & Pipe (Its in Sanford) Ask for Larry Weaver in Sales
(919) 776-0751
They have good deals on HREW tube, I usually get 1 5/8 or 1 7/8 HREW Tube

PM Tube is in GBoro or HighPoint, I cant seem to find their number.

Sanford steel doesn't STOCK tubing, but they can get it. Dillon's doesn't either

P&M tube in g-boro probably has the best pricing unless ya wanna get down by Charlotte.

Heres a pic of my buggy, its the red/black buggy:

My jd2 is still manual operated. It dont bother me to manually bend tube so I havent had the need for a hydro yet. However, I am in progress or ordering a tube shark for my business so I will have a full hyrdo bender on hand if I get lazy.

I know they stock the HREW, I get it all the time. I always tell Larry its tube but they dont catch on. You have to give it to them in pipe dimensia for some reason.

If you call Sanford steel and they say they dont stock tube, tell them you want
Round Tube 1.66 OD x 12 GA x 21'
Its 1 5/8" HREW tube.

Good point Jon, I forgot about that.. I wonder if Dillon's is the same way?

imo, sch. 40 would be fine for everything except for the main cage/cockpit area (the bars your life depends on).

Seems to me that the 1.66 OD 'tube' you are getting is probably 1 1/4" sch. 40 pipe, because it measures that OD.

I called Fishel today, he quoted me between $60-$72 depending on length.

I also called Tri-State Steel in Reidsville, 336-349-6057, they are delivering 6 20 footers to my work tomorrow at a price of about $1.90 per foot. That is 1.75 OD, .120 wall HREW.

By far the best price I can find, plus I don't have to drive anywhere to get it (yes, shipping is free).

It is HREW tube. Reread my post....For some reason Sanford steel does not understand the term 'tube', hence why you cant call them and say I need a stick of tube - theyll give Rich's answer "We dont carry tube". The 1.66 is just my tube->pipe calculation I did so that Sanford can send me the 1. 5/8 HREW.

I know the difference between pipe and tube...Ive been in this rap game long before you knew what it was.

Jon

yea rich i meant 2'x3'. thinking of going thinner and bracing the shait out of it because its going to be a heavy mofo and i want to be able to take it on and off by myself

Metto, check one of your local scrapyards, you should be able to find a piece that size no problem, and for pretty cheap normally. You may have to sand some rust off it though.

Jon, just making sure, I just know 1 1/4 sch 40 measures 1.66 OD, and 1 5/8" tube seems to be an odd size so I wouldn't think many places would carry it.
