Heres my dilema...

The rig will barely turn left to right. Practically takes a football field to turn around. Lots of 3 pt turns on the trail and had to fight to get through the Wendys drive thru this afternoon. I'm thinking I need a longer pitman arm, which would give me more throw, allowing more left to right motion?

This is all on a yj...HP60, recently installed hi steer set up etc.

The steering has never been great, but when I installed the hi steer a few weeks ago I was expecting major improvements......they never showed up

Are your high steer arms really short?

Really dropped pitman?

Are you sure your pitman arm was centered when you installed the draglink, i.e. getting equal movement in both directions? Jack the front end up and have a friend turn the wheel while you watch. Should be able to see any binding, inequalities, etc.

No on both accounts Rich. Stock pitman, KOZ arms.

I counted twice before I put it back on John....I "may" have a touch more passy than driver but it still feels like it could be doing alot more each way. I'm going to mess with it today so I'll report back later on.

Show me some pictures of the pitman arm and each steering arm. What is the measurement of the pitman? (pivot point to draglink) What is the measurement of the steering arm (pivot point to draglink) KC

I'm thinking you need a longer pitman arm. If you have enough room I would go that route. You might be able to use a wagoneer pitman arm has a little drop to it or a chevy astro arm that is completely flat. I use the chevy astro van pitman arm with my 1 ton TRE's. That arm has lots of beef.

Longer pitman arm I'd say also, the waggy arms are a tad longer than the cj-tj arms which will help. Otherwise, yes, like all above me said.

I'm running a stock tj arm so its not all that long.

The measurement from center of sector shaft to center of bolt for draglink heim is 5 1/2"

I can't load my pix bc my web connection up here is bad. I'll try again later.

Well it rained today, and I was lazy after class but, I can say from driving yours John, that is performs better than mine atm. I'll work on getting 'em tomorrow

Kevin, what is the desired length from kingpin to draglink hole?

is your front axle open, welded, or locked?

sounds like mine when i have my hubs locked (welded spiders)

hey man...I don't think anyone else has mentioned this...oh well if they did...I see you have a steering box brace and all...but make sure your steering box isn't trying to rip itself off the frame...that could sorta hurt your turning attempts...sorta...

also...are there 3 mounting hole options in those arms?...kinda looks like it in that first pic...if I'm seeing that right move your passanger side draglink mount back a hole...if not...

3 out of 4 u-bolts ain't bad...

Wassup...yea there are 3 holes. However I the middle hole has to be free because the heims can't stack up side by side( not enough room) I could move the tie rod under the hi steer arm and move the drag link back a hole but...I "may" run into clearance issues with the springs.

Didn't get the u-bolt thing ?

I'd start there...swapping draglink and tierod on different sides to get that draglink back towards the kingpin...if that's the case and it does fix it (it's gotta help)...maybe get some 1-ton Tierod ends, if they're smaller...2010L and 2010R are the numbers...I have the reamer to taper the arms if you want to go that route...I'll do if for free if I can rock race your rig at DPG...:driver:

Top picture...that u-bolt looks to be torqued to...well...useless...

Not trying to rag anything...but...looks as though your lock washers are a bit too large for your mis-alignment bushings in your heim at the pitman arm...watch that bastard and make sure it doesn't stretch off and become loose...

...and one more thing...am I the only one seeing something not exactly right with the alignment of your pitman arm bolt/nut/misalignment bushing/washer...that thing loose? holes to big in the misalignment bushing?...maybe it's just the pic...

EDIT: after seeing the next pic the bolt is indeed loose...i'm assuming these pictures were taken during the build up stage...if that's the case...disregard all my comments...if it's not...don't drive close to me...:flipoff2:

Ya Imma mess with it this week hopefully, I just stuck it in the garage for now.

Haha please, I saw mettos rig when you got done with it :flipoff2:

I don't know when you installed the 60, but have you looked at the steering stops?--if it even has adjustable stops..

Off topic, but how do you like your winch? Ordered one like three weeks ago but it still hasn't come...

It's not even close to hitting the stops either way :(. I haven't moved them in or out since I've had the 60 so I'm assuming they are still in their stock location.

Love the winch! Works great, used it today actually. I"ve had about 5 pulls on it so far, no trouble.
