ive got a 99 tj and now that the weather has gotten colder when i turn my steering wheel it makes a really annoying squeaking sound. i figure it could be some sort of moisture in the steering column but im not sure. anybody else have this problem and how do you stop the squeaking?

I have a 98 and have had the same problem. Took it to the dealer when it was still under warranty and they said there was no noise. So I guess I was hearing things.

BTW it still does it, just not as bad.

maybe some else can straighten us both out.

hard to tell based on what you gave us but these are the things i would check....

steering column where it goes through the firewall
power steering belt
any u-joints in the steering column

does it sound like it is inside the passenger compartment or outside?

My 97 had the same thing (I sold it in 99, so im going back in time here a while) but there was a "ball bearing bushing" (as the tech described it) in the column that had gone bad.
I had to literally yell and throw things in the dealership to get any action finally they had one tech who spoke up and said he heard it and had the same problem with his DD. Needless to say they were less than happy about the time and cost associated with the "minor" repair but they did fix it...

I know this is of ZERO help since I dont remember the part name, or know the process but hopefully it points in the right direction.

It woul be an easy fix if not for the damn AB

what kind of spray lube? wd40? and where exactly did you spray? is it safe to spray down in the steering column?

Open your drivers side door, leave it open.
Duck your head under the drivers side dash. There is a boot where the steering column goes through the firewall. You should be able to wiggle it back and forth while pulling on it and it will slide right off.
Use your finger or a brush and lay a thin coating of grease all the way around the inside of the boot.
Wiggle it back on.
Done.

My 98 and a buddys 97 have to be done about once a year otherwise the noise is unreal. You would think something is about to explode. I thought maybe it had something to do with my bodylift, but hers has no body lift. I dunno. It only takes about 5 minutes to lube it.

Hope that helps.
