stolen laptop...ever regret doing something?

Maybe he just had some "stuff" on the computer that he didnt want to get out.:D

Some of that is crap I know, since i'm a networking Technology Major. Mainly the stuff about the wireless, just because they use the wireless won't give away their position, however if they did use it on campus and they knew the MAC address of the NIC in the laptop they would know that it is on the network. And Microsoft isn't going after anybody because this professor installed the same copy on another computer and tried to activate it.

But other than that, if what hes saying is truthful somebody is Majorly screwed haha. Of course, if you had 100 Million dollars worth of data on your laptop, I suspect it would be secured such as it would be VERY difficult to retrieve.

This is what I suspect, :D

Juniper has a commercial product that can track rogue wifi networks and specific NICs. Signal triangulation is not hard with the right hardware. They can definitely place someone in a certain room or building pretty easily.

That said, the speech is tactical bullshitting. If the professor did not secure this supposed data he's in a fair bit of trouble himself. If he knows so much, he's DAMNED SURE not going to pass along his failure to the appropriate authorities. Besides, he's a fucktard for not using and locking an encrypted hard drive for sensitive data like that. Thinkpads have hardware encryption that don't have a load of latency. Besides, he's using windows, how smart could he be?

Ohh, so you're in school for this stuff, and now you know it all huh?

"Transponder" is hokey, but I can easily track a machine to within 5 feet using nothing more than a simple freeware program and my laptop.

But yeah, what Jason said.. He shoulda encrpyted his hard drive, that's basic stuff. We use PointSec here..

Yep, i'm a know it all :D

Haven't gotten into the wireless yet, just hard wired networks specifically cisco equipment and server administration.

But this signal tracking and locating intrigues me, must do some research now :)

My IBM T40 laptop has built in encryption and security technologies, so anyone with that much data would have it secured. So its obivously a bunch of BS to get his laptop back.

bios/power on passwords and hard drive passwords are a must for any laptop/portable pc

Meh. A BIOS password really will only buy you an extra minute. Encrypt the drive and don't leave the laptop out of your sight is about the best you can do.

i call bs...... but based on nothing other than the fact that the professor looks like a douche-rocket fag that is jerking his ego off in front of his class.

Mistor Proffessore is in some deep doo-doo...IF he actually had all that crap on his own machine...and didn't have it encrypted...he just got fired as a Consultant from a bunch of companies...and won't likely find one that will hire him in the future. All those cop agency's he was talking about coming down hard on the "boy" are likely to have a few things to say to him...Allowing sensitive info to lay around...is as serious an offence as someone stealing it. If The Lovely Jeep Wife had one of her customers laptops stolen...She would likely never be able to work in the Pharma industry again...(they all do know each other). If she didn't have the info encrypted...It would be a mark on her "permanent record":D

There are "LoJack" like "transponders that you can get for laptops, just like your car. But, to have that, and NOT encrypt anything...Dumbass...
