Strecthing my CJ

well after not performing like I wanted it to at the farm

well just say I have a bunch of issues to take care of

First and foremost, wheelbase really killed me, along with tires, too much height, and alot of other things

first issue I want to handle is Wheelbase

here is what I have now

CJ-7 on dana 60's, SOA 2" YJ springs,H1's 2" wheel spacers, gonna run 39.5x13.5x16.5 Interco Irok Bias

I got 2 ideas for this

1. comp cut the rear run XJ springs in the rear, move the gas tank, heavy duty traction bar

2. comp cut the rear, run XJ coils in the rear, and some kinda 3 link

Tell me what you would do, budget minded
 
x3 on option 1.
That, along with the tires, and maybe a leaf out of the front springs to level it out a little lower.
With as much height as you will still have, you may not need to move the tank. When you articulate, the tires and axle ends move. The only time you will get the pumpkin moving way up is during severe suspension compression.
 
You have seen how I did mine, about as cheap as you can get. I use wrangler springs, but, if you want you can use the ones you have now.

Chip I saw yours, but I was so bumfuzzled I forgot what you did

If you dont mind explain your setup

If I stetch the front about 2" and the rear about 6", you think the 2" YJ springs would be okay as far as height?
 
I did the xj springs and fuel cell in the back along with a traction bar.

Go Option #1 Modified. IME the XJ springs will not hold up to wheeling. You can see how spraypaintman's are already negatively arched and he dosen't even wheel it :lol: I don't like the idea of the lift springs either, I want to keep it as low as possible. Get some stock YJs for the front. In the rear use stock YJs and move the front hangers back to get a 105"-108" wheelbase. Alternatively you can use the flipped XJ springs but you will need a full length helper spring such as an XJ main with the eyes cut off or better a S10 main with eyes cut off. Voice of experience :)

I stole the idea from a couple rigs I saw at Tellico. Very simple, I just moved all the mounts rearward.

Where the spring mount was in the rear (not the shackle end) I extended a 2" square tube back, and brought another piece of 2" down from the frame. At that intersection is where the spring is mounted now.
I simply boxed in a section in the rear to mount the back of the springs to. I extended mine from 94" to 118" too much in my opinion. 106-110" in my opinion would be better.

I used Wrangler springs front and rear. The reason I didn't use a longer spring is because I wanted to keep my approach and departure angles as best as possible. With 44's I am almost at 90* front and rear.

I would send ya some pics, but I don't have any on this laptop and as ya know I am a little bit incapacitated at the moment.

I would run the XJs flipped around backwards with an extra main stuck in there... IIRC one end of them is about the same length as a YJ spring, and the other end is 6" longer (center pin to eye)

you could also run waggy front leafs to gain ~2" of length in the front
 
JC uses the XJ springs and has had a lot of trouble with them bending. I guess with the extra length the wrap is a lot worse.
It does help with giving more wheel base.

So, I hadn't hear about the S-10 springs. tell me bout them.
Right now I use 3 1/2" BDS springs that have really sagged. My plan was to use the warranty and get new ones, and add some add a leafs in when I did to help them hold the weight of my Jeep. So, would the S-10 spring main leafs used as add a leafs do the trick?

i use to run the xj springs in my rear... they were pretty soft and flexy, but with a wrap bar and bump stops they work fine
 
the S10 main wraps around the xj main very nicely Chip. Lot thicker, sturdier leaf than the xj. John is running this and it has helped him out alot.

Also clamps are very important when running the xj's. We looked at his packs a few times looking at different set ups for his rig and I think he's got it working the best so far. He can explain it better than I can, but he hasn't bent any the last few trips! Weight is a big factor with many rigs, especially for you Chip, so I would say an s10 will do nothing but help ya out.

XJ main to locate the axle, S10 to give it strength, and clamps to prevent fatigue....seems like the way to go. I'll be doing this shortly so I will report back when the time comes.
 
Had the XJ's on the cruiser. They will flex like mad and ride awesome but you NEED to add another main leaf into them. I also ran clamps on mine to keep them from seperating and bending on the ends.

I am using xj spings in the rear of my tj and I just bought a set of hd replacement springs from quadratec, it does give a lit bit more lift than stock xjs, but I am hoping that it will settle a bit and I will end up with a slightly stronger pack.

My front springs are stock rear cj springs. My xj springs are stock.

Does the S10 main require the pin hole to be redrilled or does it happen to be offset like the XJ main?
 
It will need to be redrilled. It is offset however, just not to the degree as the xj.

I "guess" one could leave the hole as is and just locate it accordingly to the xj CP?, but that kinda defeats the purpose of it suporting the whole xj main.
 
So I got the rear XJ leaves built with a s-10 main and they look pretty good, and seem alot stiffer

made my own straps

alright my Jeep already was already stretched in the front when I built the outboard kit about 2"

I am gonna run some stock YJ springs in the front, and add some thick Chevy main leafs to those, cut down

anybody know off the top of there head how many leaves I should add in the stock YJ's to make my ride height about the same with the rear XJ leaves
