Stupid shim ?

OK, what do shims look like for adjusting pinion angle? Are they single wedge-shaped pieces that only go between the spring and axle spring mount plate?

I replaced the springs on my 1976 CJ7 (SOA, D44s, D300) and now I have a grinding sound that starts at about 25mph up. I did not go over 40, but it was still there. It stops when I let up on the gas, but as long as I am keeping a steady speed or accelerating, the sound is there.

I also have a vibration at about 35mph, but that was there before, I think from the Yokohama MTs. I built a spring pack from Wrangler springs, and there were thin metal pieces between each spring leaf. I assumed these were only for allowing movement, but were they actually wedges and I have now screwed up the pinion angle? It looks about the same as it was, but I never measured it before I started this. HELP!

Could be a bad u-joint. The shims just look like little wedges.

The shims look like wedges. I am not real sure what you removed or why when you built your own spring pack. The wedges on my Jeep to set the pinion angle go between the spring perch and spring. They are not a part of the actual spring itself. If you did remove shims then you could have a bad pinion angle and be wearig your u-joints out.
