You're kidding, right? You don't get swine flu from pigs. Well, somebody got it from a pig, but you're going to get it from people. And I can assure you that the virus isn't going to jump from Mexico to Johnston Co. without first going somewhere in between. If anything it'll make it's way to NC via an American traveler. Something tells me not many people with swine flu are going to be hopping the border, hiking across the desert, and boarding a bus to Johnston Co.

Pigs have had swine flu for thousands of years just as people have the human flu. It gets dangerous when the pig flu somehow spreads to humans as it has recently because we don't have the resistance to it that a pig would have. In any case, the threat now is that this pig flu virus has apparently evolved into a strain that can be caught by humans. If you get the virus it will be because you were in contact with a human who had it.

Is a Mexican in Mexico still an illegal immigrant? :shaking:

Now that I think about it this is good advice. Compromised immune system or not, I would never recommend anyone visit a Wal-Mart in Smithfield.

swine flu was first found in humans in 1927....

plain old influenza kills 120 people per day worldwide...pig flu has claimed 27 in 2 weeks.....OH NOSSSSS WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE

I think the body count is over 150 now. Part of the alarm is that it killed approximately 4% of the Mexicans who contracted it. Survival rates in the States are much better, with about 1% dying. Still pretty alarming since pretty much everyone gets the flu several times during their lifetime. I think the "panic" is a good thing though. It helps to raise awareness and hopefully it will help to contain it. I just feel bad for all the people negatively affected by it like the hog farmers who won't be able to sell their products at a decent price.

150 cases that are SUSPECTED of having been swine flu.
Only 20 some confirmed that's what killed them.

Over 200k people die a year from the typical vanilla seasonal flu. This is nowhere near to catching up to that rate yet.

Yea, next week it'll be the "dog flu" or the "otter flu" or the "emu flu".

i was more going along the lines of the fact that the economy in that area is rather dependent on hog farming and any kind of drop in the consumption of pork would screw them over, and would have screwed us 20yrs ago.

I couldn't help but think this is a diversion for something else. :shaking:

OK I'll bite. The gov released this potential epidemic to cover up what great conspiracy ????

I'm just waiting for another "black plauge" to come out and kill 25% of the world pop. Its not a matter of if but when.

It's quite obvious that America is ADD. Any bright shiny new thing is going to be the new dirt to talk about.

I didn't say anything about some big great conspiracy... but you did, what conspiracy do you think? :flipoff2:
