Synthetic winch rope question

I've got some on the way to replace the 15 year old cable on my milemarker. Should I be worried about drum heat on this older winch? I know that they will generate the most heat while powering out, so I will have to avoid that; but should I be concerned with regular use? Does anyone make a heat shield I could put either on the first 15-20 feet of rope, or something to wrap around the drum under the rope?

I just bought new rope recently. My warn x8000i will heat up a bit, so I bought about 15 feet of 1" tubular webbing/ strap. ( you could find it at REI with the climbing stuff) I just threaded my rope through the webbing and wound it on the spool. Could only get about 7 feet into the webbing before you couldn't feed it anymore, used the rest on hook end to cut back on wear. My main concern was abrasion from when my spool got worn by cable.

Steve from Southeast Overland can hook you up.

Best medicine is to avoid powering out as best you can. it DOES build up heat, as was noticed on my old winch when it took a shit. The first layer of rope was, well, let's say crispy! Manufacturers on some winches now put this in the instructions when you buy a new winch. Seems when powering out, the brake system is in the "brake position" and instead of putting pressure in one spot it will wear the inside of the drum, the more you do it, the more wear there is, the more heat that is built up.
