Ok, doing the straight axle on my rig this summer, and I want to do it RIGHT the first time. Right now something in my steering sounds like a 5yr old girl in a horror movie(use your imagination). I cant tell if its the pump or the steering rack. Mike did you ever have any trouble with your steering pump running the IFS box and lockers/36's? I would love to upgrade the pump.......give me some idears.

1 steering rack in 130K (@98K), and the the pump is original, as is some of the damn fluid my slack ass has been too lazy to do anything about. Fluid's still clean and real close to original color, too, and still tests OK. What the hell are you doin' to your truck? You didn't get stoopid and put power steering fluid in the thing somewhere along the way didja?

Go figure.

Using it! :D
I've been told it's not use, it's abuse.

My first pump started whining like heck so instead of paying 300 from the stealer I got me a $50 junkyard special. 3 years later it's whining and doesn't turn as well as my old pump did. I think I got my moneys worth

I never replaced the rack in like 135K miles, and the pump is original also (I assume, bought the truck at 106K). Now I am at 150K with an IFS box and it still seems to be doing fine. I know I haven't been to Dayton, but I think I have been pretty hard on the truck, but one thing I try to be careful about is not holding the steering wheel fully turned which puts ALOT more pressure on the pump/hoses. I am not sure if that will make it last longer or not, but I would assume it would.

Open diffs are more gentle on steering components... my pump is happy go lucky when the hubs are unlocked.. I can hear it whine a little when the hubs are locked, and it's audible when I'm in 4wd.

And in Radioman's and Stanks's case, wheels with the proper (or improper) offset will put much more load on the components... As well as letting Merchant's do work on it.. (I'm SURE they used PS fluid)

Radioman.. your pump stays cool because it's constantly surrounded with a "roaring creek"..and water conducts heat what, 7x better than air? :flipoff2:

Ah, Roaring Creek water....so that's it......hmmmm. And Roaring Creek water is plenty cold enough to cool most things post haste. Could it also be that PS cooler that came with the factory "big tar" and trailer towing option combos? It also has a factory oil cooler and tranny cooler, too, so it's probably a combo of all the above and that fact that I'm running 33s.

I seriously believe you're right about the backspacing thing, too. Shortruck has always had wheels with the Toy backspacing, so the rack and even the cheezy IFS components have been somewhat durable. I think the 8 inch wheels and the near-stock backspacing and all the factory options that help keep the heat down are the reasons I've had as little trouble as I have. The front wheel bearings are all original, too, BTW. After that one lower ball joint failure at URE, I got spares, and of course, Murphy says that with spares, I won't need 'em. So far that's been true.

HardTaco, I'm sure the "big tars" and the shallow backspacing have probably taken a toll on yer stuff, but I just can't understand it since you're so gentle with yer truck. Wink, wink, snicker, snicker......

Just remember, Tacos don't use PS fluid in the system - it's death on the rack and pump seals and thrust surfaces. Toyota calls for auto tranny fluid and says to NEVER use PS fluid. I woulda thought that the friction modifiers in the AT fluid that make the clutches and bands grip but still lube things would be less desirable than PS fluid, but WTF do I know?

So what do the guys run in the solid swap trucks. Do they run PS fluid for the older boxes or ATF. I'm using atf in mine

My guess would be to run whatever it says to run on the reservoir cap. Mine reads,"Fill with automatic transmission fluid only" and states the names Dexron II/III, Mercon, yadda yadda yadda. If the older IFS box and res list something on the cap, run it, but I just can't remember back to my previous truck's requirements, so I guess this post is useless.

whoa, i didnt know our trucks had a tranny and ps pump cooler? Sweet :)

My taco was the big tar and towing package taco too. 4cyl auto with 4.56's. After a closer look/listen today, well a closer look/listen by the gf, she pointed at the "big gray thingy with the black boots on it", and then i crawled down there and confirmed it. its the dang ole steering rack. It only has to last till the end of GSMTR, so hopefully it will make it :driver: (easier said than done though huh?) i do have a spare just in case though.

If the rack is making noises and it's hard to steer, that means it's the high freq vibration of pressure getting past the internal seals. Is the fluid dark colored to black? If so, it's gonna be a daily wait for failure, not a month. From my experience it may make it to GSMTR but not likely through it. Might as well take the spare with you so you can get home. If you don't use it off road, it may make it a few more weeks for road use. Sorry I don't have any encouragement for yer situation.
