so i get stuck on the side of the road today because my alternator dies, not because of the snow like all the other :poop: drivers who spin out and get stuck.

With the help of an awesome semaritan i got to a gas station. I started to take the alternator off but i can not get the wires off.

how does the plastic boot come off the nut that holds the wire on?

I think it's just kind of clipped on. Like 2 little ears that you have to squeeze to separate it.

yes the boot comes off just pull it off and puch it up the wire (its live so disco the batt) it is a 12mm nut under that. You also have to remove the clip on the back of the alt. That always sticks so good luck. BTW you should be able to access it through the wheel well. There is a 14 mm that holds the alt to the bracket and your done. I would test the battery also b4 replacing the alt. You can test the alt with a volt meter if the battery will start it.

Man that sucked!! Changin alterantor at gas station in 20 degrees was not so much fun. I'm so jellous of the cars with alternators on top of the engine. Ur right that other plug was very very hard to get off! Thanks for the info! I'm home now. BTW 77 in rock hill is sheer ice.

Glad you got it fixed. Problem with those alternators on the top... They never go out.:)

You should just cut the front clip off like i did , just build an engine cage and attach the rad. and headlights. I also recomend a 2" engine lift and the starter and alt. will just fall out I only have fenders (held on mainly with zip ties) in the way....

Glad you made it home:driver:

Haha that's how it always goes. What ever breaks is never easy

I love the engine cage idea. Would make things so much easier. But I'm sure it's not street legal so have to wait until I get tow rig and trailer

Why not I drive mine everyday it's legal with full width axles and 38.5" tires

Nice 4runner!!!!

to anyone else who reads this: the only way i could get the wire plug off (not the power cable to the battery which is bolted on) is to unbolt 4 - 8mm bolts to take off cover on the back of the alternator. This gave me full access to the plug.
