Taping rollbar?

The factory rollbar on my '89 4Runner is starting to look pretty crappy, really scratched up, mostly from rubbing on the top as I pull in/out from under it, or hit it w/ tools, my head, etc. I've seen some folks wrap rollbars in electrical tape. I suppose painting would be the simplest solution, but being the klutz I am I wonder how long it'd take to scratch off again; since the surface is so smooth, will a rattle-can spray stay on?
Anyway I was thinking electrical tape, is there an ideal kind or size? The normal stuff is so narrow it seems it'd take 4 miles and 40 million loops to do it all, and does it get sticky/funky when hot. What's the normal solution?

Or if you wanted to take the cheap way out, get some foam pipe insulation. and cable-tie it up.

foam or rollbar padding is nice and purpose driven, but one dump or it scapes on something and its torn to tatters. Every time i lay mine on its side or scrape a rock, im out there cutting cable ties and replacing padding.

Spraypaint & some good padding from my local race shop with some zip ties.

What is she - the padding, or the air bags? :D

So is there a better kind of tape? I figured E-tape would not be good b/c of the melty sticky nasty issue.
I'm hesitant on foam simply because my bikini top is stapped around the rollbar, and back under itself, here is an example

WARNING, SUPER HI RES PIC

So when I sinch it down, the straps would compress/bite into the foam. This happened to the padding that waso n the support bar (pipe insulation I think).

Damn how did that get in there! LOL

I knew you guys would like that one. Yep, the wife likes big cannons!

spraypaintman has a hot wife! Lucky me! :flipoff2:

:huggy:

I'm a stud....

Try running down to Wally World or your local bike shop and check out the grip tape they sell for road bike handlebars. I've never seen it used for this, but it's cheap, easy to apply, and comes in all sorts of colors to make your truck happy!

Why know scuff it up and put a couple of coats of Herculiner on it? It's pretty tough and wouldn't wear off as quickly as repainting...

IMHO, e-tape on the bar or padding is too ghetto... even for me! BTW, I have a few extra coozy's if you need them! :D

Hey Dave, I told Greg Slade about your Coozie rolbar padding, ought to have seen him catching coozies at the Dixie Run!

Like I said before, a good roll bar pad from Bestop is all you need. it is covered in cloth and matches your interior and soft top. doesn't tear or scratch easily and is very easy to clean. It can be installd in seconds and saves your head in a roll over.

I wouldn't recommend putting tape on there because that stuff will get nasty, especially in the summer when it gets really hot and the tape gets soft and flexible and the adhesive gets smeared everywhere.... ugh, nasty.

Hmmm.... Herculiner.... may look into that.
Don't need much of it though, even a quart seems an overkill. Anybody got a little leftover? Or Dave, wanna split some, we'll just do yer whole truck inside and out, haha.

Hm, maybe bright bling green?
I'd prob stay w/ black just so it can still get really hot and burn the !@#$ out of my fingers during the summer. That's half the fun.

Man the BestTop padding is pricy. Plus it looks like they come in "kits" for specific vehicles, haven't seen one for 4Runners. But I didn't look that hard.

Couple thoughts here
1) El Cheapo (El Rednecko) Black tape but instead of e-tape use black "duct"or 200MPH racing tape. Wider, tougher, and no heat ick issues

2) The best solution IMHO for rollbar is "Race grade" roll bar pad. It is actually a semi-hard yet pliable plastic/polymer ERRR really cool SH*T . My neighbor has a race truck he uses it on, it looks awesome and I have thought of using it on the K but never got round to it.
I could ask where and $ if your interested. Has anyone else seen this?
