TBI in-tank fuel pump vs rail mount

I have been running an external fuel pump for my 5.7 tbi for some time. Works great but the whole 'it needs to push not pull' thing keeps me wondering if its worth the trouble to get an in-tank version and mate to a CJ tank. Also, the fact that its loud and not cooled makes me wonder if its a better environment in the tank anyway. So, do I take a TBI intank pump and make it fit my tank, or not worry about it? Pro/Cons and dangers of doing so? I would leave the one I have in place as a backup since its there.
Anybody got a $0.02?

I have a custom sid around my 1 year old tank so a new tank/skid is not is the plans so that option is out for now.

I have been running a Datzun 280z external pump for years with no issues on my 84 J10 with a SBC TBI. I also ran the same set up on my 64 J200 with a TPI. It is not loud at all. I have it mounted to the frame near the tank. they are less than $100 at Advanced Auto. but I got both of mine a pick and pull :) for $25

I helped a buddy on his tbi yj a couple of years ago, and I installed a chevy truck pump where his yj pump was origanally on his yj tank. I was pretty simple, I just soldered the electrical plugs from the yj pump to the truck pump and I also shortned the pickup a little because the truck pump was a little bit longer. If the yj tank would fit in your cj that would be my choice. This one has not give any problems in two years of street driving.

It's a whole lot more fun to replace an in-tank pump! :flipoff2: Seriously, if the external works fine, I wouldn't change it. Keep it regulated down and it should work for years. They're not designed to be cooled. Volvos use an in-tank pickup pump and a frame mounted high-pressure pump. The in-tank usually dies first, but nobody changes them because it's such a pain! VW, Volvo, Nissan, Honda, all use external pumps. All cars known for their reliability. If it does die, it's a 15 minute job to change it, and you don't have to drop the tank.

A smart car maker would put in an access door over top ofthe fuel pump in the tank so it's a 15 min job there too. You know Ford did that on the contour, but the dip shits didn't make the hole big enough to get the pump out! So Ford, Not smart!
