I got a couple of tc style steering pumps laying around that the back plate has broken on both. Anyone know of anywhere that would sell just the backing plate? I’ve toyed with the idea of buying a $50 Amazon one and stealing the parts off of it.

Pick below is of the last one that broke in a weird spot…. Pretty sure that little nipple isn’t normal

Well I broke down and purchased a $40 tc style pump off of amazon and gave it a good visual inspection. Upon first look, it looks to be exactly the same body wise (ports are different because it was for a 1997-2013 corvette).

Tore it down and everything but the main body was same. The body felt like it was made of aluminum and the o-rings and seals looked different than the PSC pump but i didnt need any of that anyway.

I used the shaft and backing plate off of the Amazon pump for the PSC pump. Assembling the pump went with no issues and the pump feels good when turning it. We will now see how well it holds up.

I have often wondered about rebuilding the PS pumps on my XJ since I would go through them about once a year. I got a hold of a PSC pump and swapped it in. Is a TC pump different than what comes stock in an XJ or other Jeep?

Theres an old thread somewhere that tells you what to do to modify the TC pumps somewhere. Im sure the internals are of a better material that whats in the Amazon pump but i dont have any material specs on any of that. All I needed was the back plate and didnt want to just throw it in the trash and spend the $275 on a new one. I called PSC a couple years back on another that the backplate had broken on and they wouldnt sell me a new backplate. They told me to just buy a new one.

The Jeep pump on their site is $425 now.

There was a Pirate/Irate thread where someone went through some pumps and talked about differences. My memory says that most of the parts had the same specs, but the housings were ported for more/better flow. Also, the PSC pumps are designed with the AN fittings, vs a factory housing which uses a press-in barb. Many have tried welding/epoxying/tapping an AN fitting onto a stock pump only for it to leak.

Those pumps are all basically the same except for porting and fitting type. And of course quality of components used. I bought a $40 eBay pump for my Tacoma (TC style as well) and it was loud from day one and quit completely after a couple years of wheeling. Replaced it with a $100ish oreillys unit in case I need to warranty it.

I had been running a AutoZone TC pump on the jeep. Once I went through 4 pumps in one day. Everyone on the shelf leaked from the tank o ring. They never asked a question on 4 returns in 1 day.
I was running hyd assist. And due to drilling out the flow/relief valve it would squeal. Blended some aw32 hyd oil with the steering fluid. Squeal stopped, fluid stabilized and I ran that one for 3 years.

SO you added aw32 hydraulic oil and it quieted it down? My used PSC has a noise issue I assumed it just needed a rebuild.

yes, the oil was cavitating some. the thicker oil stopped the cavitation through that larger hole I drilled. Sounded like cavitation anyhow.
