Tellico OHV Trail Closure Impact

While taking a detour, the long way home, after the SFWDA 2nd Quarter Meeting in Blairsville, GA, I decided I would stop and talk to some folks about the trail closures at Upper Tellico OHV.

I stopped in to Murphy Auto Parts which is across from the NAPA dealer on the way out of town. Both he and the fellow in Appalachian Outfitters next door were positive that business was down, but they couldn’t state for a fact that the trail closures were to blame. With the current economic down turn they said business was so bad anyway that they really didn’t know how much the closures were affecting them.

At the Texaco convenience store on the left after you cross the bridge on the way out of town, the clerk was more positive that their business was hurting due to the closures. She said that they were always swamped on weekends, Saturdays especially, before but that now weekends were the same as the rest of the week.

A lady who was on her way into the store said that she could definitely tell that there was less traffic in town, especially weekends though she had no opinion on whether it was a good thing or bad.

Three fellows I spoke to in the parking lot were more definitie in their opinion. They said the closures were a good thing and that until the trout fishing improved they should keep the trails closed. I moved along quickly as their obvious level of intoxication and staunch ideas about the trails made me a little uneasy.

My last stop was at the store at the blinking light where you turn right off of Joe Brown highway. The clerk there knew nothing about trails, Tellico, 4x4s or anything else. All she know was that there was Hiwassee Lake just down the hill. I wonder if our presence is so little missed that she didn’t care or that she was just clueless?

Basically I guess, life goes on. Murphy is still Murphy. Maybe a little less traffic, maybe a little less money coming in, but hey, it’s the hand we were delt, we’re playing the cards we got!

thanks for taking the time. i wish (for our sake) there had been a few more people intown who misses the traffic.

You are on to something there....Murphy can't be the only town around that would miss the traffic. Some towns a little farther out might..and the campgrounds too!

This would also be ammunition in the lawsuit...about how the closures are affecting the economy..but one would hafta get the right info from the business owners and over a period of time...

I bet if you talked to Chuck and Helen at tellico campgrounds they will tell you that it is hurting them BAD

there website is also down :(

A friend of mine bought a Landcruiser from a guy in Atlanta on Friday. All of the guys vehicles had Trout Unlimited tags on them. My buddy asked the guy if he planned on going to Tellico, and the guy said he had never heard of it.

Like Bryson City... IIRC, the last stop for alkyhall before hitting deadwood

It is particularly aggravating that the folks *IN* Murphy aren't intelligent enough to put 2 & 2 together about the closure affecting business. I can't see a few dozen TU flunks blowing in for the day replacing the money spent by hundreds of wheelers in town for entire weekends/events...

Umatilla was the last town before the ONF from the SR19 side, but the Walmart was in Mt. Dora so they got weekend traffic as well...but the guys are finding businesses that are hurting...and that is a dad burn shame... :(

I find it really hard to believe that the business' there haven't noticed their business is bad.

Lisa, you're settling into Madison County pretty dad burn good! :)

The "season" isn't quite over yet. I'm sure they'll feel the impact after the end of the year

They took us for granted is why no one notices the trucks not there anymore. By no means am I saying we should say "screw'em" but this is a good time to educate them on why their businesses have gone down. It's sad to see but it's the truth.
