telling the year of an axle

I have an 8.8 I bought from a member on the Board. He did not know the year of the explorer it came from. Now I need to know so I can get my new shafts. How can I go about finding out the year explorer this 8.8 came from?

OK, here are the numbers I can find on the tags of the 8.8

4L10 88 9A21

I think the 4L10 means it has a limited slip and 4.10 gears. The 88 I believe means it is an 8.8 axle, but what does the 9A21 mean?

There is also a tag wrapped around the axle tube that says 615E

Can anyone help figure out what year this axle is?

The year will be stamped into the ring gear.
