Tennessee Football Players Face Armed Robbery Charges
Thursday, November 12, 2009

Print ShareThisKNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Three freshman Tennessee football players are charged with an attempted armed robbery.

According to Knoxville police, wide receiver Nu'Keese Richardson and defensive back Janzen Jackson and Mike Edwards were arrested after the early Thursday morning incident.

The victims told police they were sitting in their parked vehicle at a gas station near Tennessee's campus when two males, one brandishing a handgun, approached.

The two suspects demanded whatever the victims had. When the victims showed they had no money, the suspects joined a third man in a Toyota Prius and left.

Police located a Toyota Prius matching the description and the victims identified Richardson and Edwards as the men who approached the vehicle.

Officers say they found a pellet gun, drug paraphernalia and a plastic bag containing what appeared to be marijuana.

Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton says he is evaluating the incident.

-nothing says gangster like a Toyota Prius :shaking: wonder if they'll just transfer to Memphis or ECU?

As a former Vol ball player, this is sickening...but I can't say that people/players like this don't run rampant in college athletics. Hopefully, the athletic department will do right by the University, and kick the guys out....there's just no room for that sort of behavior, especially considering they have everything handed to them. I can't begin to fathom what would cause them to do this. Maybe drug money...considering one of the guys was suspended last game for a failed drug test. However, I feel that is the least of their worries, seeing as this is classified as a class B felony (up to 60 years imprisonment). In reality, after seeing the leniancy I've seen in the past, these guys will more than likely see little to no jail time and get many, many hours of community service.

Side note...I think the irony of the Nu'keese fiasco in the offseason between Kiffin and Meyer is hysterical.

Typical...

Damn I hate that sort of answer, and will stop short of calling it ignorant. As I said, I played ball there until last year, I'm an Accounting as well as Finance major and finishing up my degrees this semester, with a 3.7 GPA, I'm active in the community and my church...never failed a drug test...etc. There are alot of players out there like me. Sure there's a good share of thugs, definitely more than I'd like to see, but the few bad apples aren't the norm.

Look at it this way...I assume you wheel, since you're on this board, so I'm sure you have seen or have heard about a wheeler trespassing or wheeling illegally. How does the media, government, hippies, etc...try to paint that picture? All wheelers are that wreckless. But you know better right?

At this level of athletics, of course you're going to hear all the bad stuff surrounding the university. But if you really stop and think about it, you may only have a hand full of problem kids on a 105-135 man roster. I believe those remaining 100+ team members would take offense to the fact of being lumped in with those few bad apples, just as you do when you're lumped in with stupid wheelers.

I guess they need something to do with their time cause they sure aint winning many games.

5-4 and looking like they'll do ok in the last 3 making that 8-4 in their first season under Kiffin. This also means a bowl.

You sure about that statement?

I guess you can take the promising athlete out of the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto out of the promising athlete.

i think they will go 2-1 over the three games as long as Crompton doesn't choke.

GO GATORS

I think he was referring to black athletes, not college athletes in general. Therefore, it's a bigoted statement, although ignorant, too. Either way, well said, Ben. And I applaud you on your achievements.

I know Miss hasn't been great but they might sneak up on UT. Either way hell of a first season with Kiffin. Im waiting to see what smart ass comments he has to say about their arrests.

My thoughts exactly

Thanks...I wasn't trying to toot my own horn, just making a point that with the media hype, it's guys like me that get forgotten.

snead has been playing like dump lately so I think we'll do better than average. he's already been shown to fold like a cheap suitcase when the defense put it on him.

obviously. that was an embarassment. we didn't do that bad playing the #1 & #2 team in the nation. our defense fell apart from the start. Crompton got player of the game for TN so no fault lies there.

I guess that shows how much I follow/care about UT football.TN can never win the big games. They can drill people like w kentucky but can never beat teams like UCLA,Florida,Auburn.Yeah they'll probably go to some thrid rate bowl game because of all the die hard fans that'll come to the game and spend their money in that town.

They will be in one of those bowls that has like 3 or 4 sponsor names on it...Like the california credit union san Fransisco, US Army, Bank of America Bowl.

My comment was completely taken the wrong way and "catfish" who are you to say this is what he meant to say?

I think its typical that they pull these kids from the streets, whether it be the ghetto or from the suburbs, and they have no idea how to act. It was not a knock on college athletes, black or white, but teenagers in general. They are getting an expense paid trip to get a degree, I understand they do have a lot to do other than play ball. I just wish they would realize how good they do have as a student athlete and not piss it away for a couple of bucks and holding somebody up with a cap gun.

I would watch your "ignorant" remarks and I will use typical in better context.

Update on disciplinary actions:
Looks like Kiffin is setting the law for character issues, and I like to see that:

It's official, Richardson and Edwards are dismissed:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/291600-tennessees-kiffin-dismisses-richardson-edwards

I'm glad to see they handled it the right way. This new coaching staff and program don't need that kind of talent. They also don't need stereotypes about the type of players they have. I hope Jackson wasn't in on it but we'll see. I hope we can retain him in the long run.
