Building a th400 for my rig i was wondering is it a good idea to put a shift kit in it, should i get a reverse manual valve body, do i just need to get a stock rebuild kit from the parts store? Who do you recommend i get my rebuild kit from? Im putting it behind a stockish fuel injected small block, and bolting it to a 203 205 doubler. I only plan on trial riding, no hill killing or racing.

The 400 will take a lot. Only thing I will add to what Jody listed would be a good cooler. Heat is the killer, and depending on the converter you go with, trail riding where it may be in and out of lockup or changing gears more often will build up the heat.

Like StretchASU says get rid of the heat. It took a 11” x 14” 3 row coil with a 10” fan to keep my 400 cool. If you have any amount of investment to protect put a temperature gauge on it. I silver soldered a bung in the pan and used a mechanical gauge.

Thanks for the advice guys. What pan are you running or recommend i get, im thinking the derale deep steel pan.
